Cincinnati Kings Drop Third Game in a Row, Lose to Wilmington

Cincinnati Kings News Release

CINCINNATI--The Cincinnati Kings made only one glaring mistake in Friday night's game, but it was all the Wilmington Hammerheads needed as the Kings drop their third game in a row, 1-0, to the visiting Hammerheads in United Soccer Leagues action at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

The only score of the game came in the 36th minute on an own goal, when Kings goalie Brian Schaeper came out of the goal to block a shot, and the ball bounced off him and into the Kings net. Wilmington forward Ryan Miller was credited with the goal.

The Kings stepped up play after halftime and had several prime opportunities to score in the second half, but shots either were blocked or hit the Hammerhead goalpost.

"We talked about raising our level of intensity in the second half," said Coach Jon Pickup. "We did a much better job of it late in the game but it still wasn't enough. If you can't keep that level up, you're gonna get punished."

The Kings had 17 shots on goal and six saves, while Wilmington had nine shots on goal with three saves. The Kings were whistled for 13 fouls, Wilmington 11.

The Kings now head to Harrisburg, Pa., for rare back-to-back night games as they face the City Islanders Saturday night. And now, injuries are an issue. With a handful of players either hurting, out of action or just coming back from injury, the Kings are so shorthanded, they had two coaches on the playing field Friday night, Coach Pickup and assistant John McGinlay.

"That's the situation we're in right now," said Pickup. "We're getting on the buses to go to Harrisburg with 12 players--and not all of them healthy. That's the level we've reached with our team. It's not an excuse, but we need two or three more players."

The Kings are now 3-3-2 in USL Second Division action. With the win, Wilmington improves to 6-2-1.
