Cincinnati Kings News Release

WILDER, KY (May 24, 2007) -- The Cincinnati Kings fought back from a 2-0 deficit late in the second half of action to tie the Wilmington Hammerheads, 2-2, in United Soccer Leagues Second Division action at the Town and Country Soccer Complex.

The Kings controlled the offense in the first half with several good chances to score, but were unable to convert on six shots on goal to the Hammerheads' three in a scoreless first half. It stayed that way until well into the second half, when Ross McKenzie scored for Wilmington on a breakaway goal in the 75th minute. Four minutes later Jamie Holmes repeated the move, breaking toward the Kings goal and just getting enough on the ball to push it into the net and give Wilmington a seemingly unsurmountable 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play.

The Kings finally got on the board in the 87th minute on a ball that Mike McGinlay bounced in front of the Wilmington goal before David Horne converted to make it 2-1. The Hammerheads were content to kill the clock to hang onto the win, and almost succeeded before Bret Jones, a late substitute, drove home the unassisted goal with just seconds to go in extra time to seal the tie.

With the one point earned in the tie, the Kings qualify for the U.S. Open Cup competition for the third year in a row. The U.S. Open Cup matchup and site will be announced next week.

The Kings had a total of 10 shots on goal to Wilmington's seven, and Kings' goalie Francois Dubourdeau was credited with two saves to five for Hammerhead goalie Dan Ruch.

The Kings' record now stands at 2-3-2 on the season, while the Hammerheads continue to look for their first victory, at 0-4-2. The Kings now go on the road for three straight games, at Charlotte, Wilmington and Cleveland, before returning to Town & Country on Friday June 15th against the Western Mass Pioneers.
