San Diego Sockers News Release
Reserve keeper wins debut with sterling effort
San Diego Sockers goalkeeper Chris Toth, whose strong second half performance allowed the Sockers to escape from Estadio Furati with a 6-5 overtime win against Revolucion Tijuana, was today named Sockers Player of the Week in a balloting of front office and media members. Toth stopped a shootout attempt in the late third quarter and made several sterling saves at point blank range, including three in the final two minutes of regulation play.
"I couldn't be prouder of Chris," said Sockers forward Anthony Medina, who scored the game-winning goal and came in second in the weekly balloting, "The ball is dark, the lighting is poor, and the fans are all over you. Some of the saves he made, I think he was using 'The Force'."
The son of Zoltan Toth, Chris grew up dreaming of one day playing for his father's team, the San Diego Sockers. Chris underwent heart surgery just after birth for a transposition of the major arteries. He underwent a second heart surgical procedure during his sophomore year at Fallbrook High School, correcting a narrowing of the pulmonary artery. Undaunted, Toth was named to the all-county team his junior and senior seasons, and was named to the North County All Stars his senior year.
After spending one year at Mira Costa College, Toth joined the Sockers' developmental team, the San Diego Fusion and has worked his way up the ranks to the Sockers' first team.
The Sockers (5-0) now take on their most challenging road trip of the season, an Ohio River battle with the Louisville Lightning and the Cincinnati Kings. Friday night at 5pm (PST) the Sockers will face the Lightning (1-3) at the Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex. Saturday night at 4:30pm they will take on the Cincinnati Kings (5-1) in a battle of PASL-Pro division leaders. Both games can be seen and heard exclusively on Sockers broadcast partner 619Sports.Net.
San Diego's next home game will be a quarterfinal US Open matchup against the Sockers' developmental team, the San Diego Fusion, at 6:15pm on December 29th. It will be Legends Night, as the Sockers bring back and honor their 1985-1986 championship team. 2-for-1 grandstand tickets are available at www.sdsockers.com or by calling (866) 799-GOAL.
