New England Riptide News Release
Lowell, MA- The Chinese National Team rolled into Lowell last night fresh from a fourth place finish in the World Cup. Meanwhile the Riptide were coming off a five game winning streak. It would be Qi Li for China, one of the premier pitchers in the world, having competed in the last two Olympics while the Riptide would be going with Eileen Canney, who in her last start retired the first twenty batters she faced narrowly missing a no hitter and a perfect game. This game each pitcher yielded six hits, however China got three of theirs in the fourth to score three runs and take the game 3-1.
All the damage was done with two outs as Shaing Ai began innocently with a single, followed by a double just inside the first base line by Li Chunxia. A walk to Renrong Mi loaded the bases and Canney looked like she might be out of it when she got two strikes on Ying Tan. However, Tan lined the next pitch into left field to score the first run of the game and two more came in when Shanel Scott was unable to field the ball.
The Riptide had their chances throughout the game as Li walked three, however no better chance than in the seventh when they scored their lone run and loaded the bases thanks in part to sloppy defense by China. Lisa Modglin led off with a walk. Jackie Pasquerella grounded a pitch back to Li who through low to second to put runners on first and second. Next, Tarrah Beyster, hitting for Kelley, hit into what should have been a double play, but after forcing Pasquerella at second, first baseman Quioqin was unable to handle the throw. Gina Carbonatto singled hard off the glove of Li and after Scott popped up a bunt for out number two, Lyndsey Angus drew a walk to load the bases for Garland Cooper. Cooper had singled in her first two at bats, but the Riptide's hits were not coming in bunches tonight. Cooper, despite a valiant effort struck out to end the Riptide's chances.
Canney is now 6-3 and the Riptide, 17-12. The two teams resume their series Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Martin Softball Field at 7:05.
