Colorado Chill News Release
The Colorado Chill of the National Women's Basketball League and the South Dakota Rushmore Plaza Civic Center announced the opportunity to bring one of South Dakota's most popular professional athletes back home to play in front of a "home town" crowd.
In a press conference, Brian Maliske, General Manager for the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, and Colorado Chill point guard Becky Hammon announced plans to have the NWBL team bring a game to South Dakota. Hammon, a 1995 Stevens High School graduate will return for the first time in both her collegiate and professional careers to South Dakota to play.
"I am so excited to go back home and play in front of my friends and family," Hammon said. "It will be the first time in almost ten years that they will not have to travel somewhere across the country to see me play."
At Stevens High School, Becky averaged 26.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists her senior year. In 1995, Hammon was named Gatorade South Dakota Player of the Year, and in 1994 she was named South Dakota Ms. Basketball. While attending Colorado State University, she racked up 2740 career points, which is still best all-time in the Western Athletic Conference (men or women) and at CSU. She is currently headed into her third year of the NWBL and recently completed her sixth season with the WNBA's New York Liberty, where she has been named a two-time WNBA All-Star.
"I have had the opportunity to watch Becky in college and then go on to become an awesome professional athlete," said Dave King, General Manager of the Colorado Chill. "I thought it was time that South Dakota get a chance to see how good she has become."
Becky Hammon and the Colorado Chill will play an exhibition game on Saturday, January 8, 2005, 7:00p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The format is to be determined at a later date will either be an intra-squad or an exhibition game against another NWBL team. For ticket information call 605-394-4111 or 1-800-GOTMINE.
