The DASA St. Louis Blues Sled Hockey program originated in 2000 through the Disabled Athlete Sports Association as a wheelchair hockey club, and has since become a dominant force on the national sled hockey scene winning national titles in 2012 and 2013. Currently, two USA National Sled Hockey Team stars are on the DASA Blues roster: defenseman Josh Pauls and goaltender Steve Cash. Cash did not allow a single goal during the 2010 Paralympics, and was later awarded an ESPY for his outstanding performance. Both players will be in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games defending their gold medal finish from the 2010 Vancouver Games. DASA Blues defenseman Billy Hanning is a member of the USA National Sled Hockey Development Squad.
The Nashville Sled Preds are a rising program out of Tennessee, and recently won the 2013 NHL Sled Classic C Division.
Sled hockey, also known as ice sledge hockey, originated in the 1960's in Europe, and was first featured as a Paralympic sport in the 1994 Winter Paralympics. Most athletes participating in sled hockey have a lower-body disability, though some leagues allow a limited number of able-bodied athletes to compete as well. The sport is played on a double-bladed sled rather than skates, and athletes use two small sticks each equipped with a blade-end for puck-handling and a spiked-end for pushing the sled on the ice.
For more information regarding DASA and its programs, please contact Joe Naughton of the Disabled Athlete Sports Association at intern@dasasports.org or at 636.477.0716.
Disabled Athlete Sports Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit dedicated to offering and promoting adaptive sports and programs to individuals with physical, visual, and hearing impairments in the St. Louis Metro-area. DASA athletes compete competitively and recreationally in local, national, and international sporting events. DASA is the only Paralympic Sport Club in St. Louis.
