Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have hired Jason Spence as an assistant to head coach Jeff Flanagan. He will also serve as the team's director of community relations. The Chiefs have been a member of the ECHL since 1988 and are the only original team still playing in its original city.

"This is a good opportunity for me to move forward with a new career. The style that I played wouldn't allow me to play anymore, but I'm excited to stay in Johnstown in a coaching role," said Spence.

"Jason has given everything he possibly could give the organization as a player, and he'll do the same in his new capacity. His relationship with the returning players will allow for continuity and his experience, leadership and competitive fire will surely be an asset to Coach Flanagan going forward. He has long been an ambassador for the team in the community and will continue his great work in that important area. We all look forward to working with Jason as he begins this new chapter of his hockey career," said Chiefs Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin.

A native of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Spence joins the coaching ranks after 10 seasons as a pro, seven of which were with the Chiefs. The rugged left wing became popular in the home of the movie "Slap Shot" with his tough, physical play. After his final season in 2008-09 Spence sits fourth all-time on the Chiefs' penalty minute list with 773. The men ahead of him are noted enforcers Jeff Sullivan (1,105), Rick Boyd (966), and Perry Florio (799).

Well known for his strong work ethic and steady influence in the dressing room, Spence served as an alternate captain in each of the last two seasons under former coach Ian Herbers. Many times when he was unable to play during those seasons Spence would work as an acting assistant coach on game nights.

Like everyone associated with the Chiefs, Spence has high expectations for this season. "We have a great core returning from last year; especially the guys in leadership roles. With the new talent coming in we can use that core to start something really special this season."
