Chico Outlaws News Release

Chico, Calif. - The Chico Outlaws Professional Baseball Team announced today that 16-year Major League veteran Garry Templeton will manage the team during the 2010 Golden Baseball League season. Templeton brings a wealth of experience to the Outlaws both from his career as an All-Star shortstop in the National League and from his time as a manager in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.

"It will be exciting to have such an accomplished professional as our new team leader," said Chico Outlaw General Manager Curt Jacey. "Garry's proven he can win at any level, but just as important is his tremendous reputation of being involved in the community wherever he has played or managed."

From 1998-2001, Templeton managed in the Anaheim Angels system going 294-272 (.519) during that time. He managed the A- level Cedar Rapids Kernels (1998) and AA Erie Sea Wolves (1999) before taking over the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers of the PCL in 2000. Templeton spent the 2001 season managing the Triple-A Salt Lake Stingers. After spending two seasons managing the Northern League's Gary Railcats (2003-2004), Templeton came to the Golden Baseball League during the inaugural 2005 season as As the Fullerton Flyers manager for the team's first three seasons (2005-2007), he helped build the team's foundation, leading them to the 2006 GBL Second-Half Championship and constructing much of the team that went on to win the 2008 GBL Championship. Last season he managed the Long Beach Armada to a 40-36 record which was the second best overall record in the GBL South Division.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Templeton in the first round of the 1974 amateur draft with the 13th overall selection. The switch-hitting shortstop debuted in the big leagues in 1976 and spent six seasons with St. Louis before being traded to the San Diego Padres for the 1982 season. After a productive decade in San Diego where he also served as Team Captain, the Padres traded him to the New York Mets during the 1991 season, his final year in the Major Leagues. Templeton was selected to the NL All-Star team three times (1977, 1979, 1985), won two NL Silver Slugger Awards (1980, 1984) and led the NL in hits in 1979 with 211 while becoming the first ever player to record 100 hits from each side of the plate in a single season, a feat that has only been accomplished one other time. He finished with over 2000 hits, 3 NL Triples titles, and appeared in the 1984 World Series with the Padres.

"I've wanted to manage in Chico since the first year of the GBL," said Templeton. "This is the best place to play in the league, with the best fans, and a great facility. There is a fine nucleus of players coming back that with some additions can get the Outlaws back in the playoffs and competing once again for a championship."

Templeton will take over a team that started the 2009 season strong but faltered early and never really got back into the pennant race finishing 11 games under .500. However, it was a significant improvement over the 2008 squad that finished 18 games under .500 just a year after the Outlaws had won the 2007 GBL Championship. Templeton's hiring marks a return to the successful strategy of hiring a major league experienced player who also has extensive minor league managing experience that had former Chico teams skippered by Bill Plummer, Charlie Kerfeld, and Mark Parent annually appearing in the playoffs. Templeton replaces Kory DeHaan (a mid-season replacement for Greg Cadaret) who was signed in the off-season by the San Diego Padres to coach in their farm system.
