HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Chicago Storm's Stephen Armstrong and the United Soccer Leagues First Division's Charleston Battery came up short during Wednesday's championship match of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Armstrong started and contributed two corner kicks as the Battery fell to Major League Soccer's D.C. United, 2-1, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. This marked the Battery's first-ever U.S. Open Cup final appearance, and the organization is the first USL-1 team to head to the championship since the Rochester Raging Rhinos in 1999. D.C. won its second U.S. Open Cup and secured a place in the 2009 CONCACAF Champions League.
Charleston's David Kenga substituted for Armstrong in the 82nd minute of Wednesday's match, with Charleston trailing D.C. United, 2-1.
Armstrong originally was chosen by D.C. United in the second round (13th overall) of the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. The Storm standout completed his second season with Chicago in 2007-08, and the organization recently announced it is officially joining the Xtreme Soccer League on Sept. 16.
Armstrong had an assist during the tournament, and he recently had a key post- regulation penalty kick during the semifinals against the USL-1's Seattle Sounders. The Battery defeated two MLS squads during the U.S. Open Cup - the defending MLS champion Houston Dynamo, and FC Dallas.
The U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual event that is open to all professional and amateur soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer.
