Chicago Blaze Set to Open 2005 Season

January 13, 2005 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Chicago Blaze News Release

Naperville, IL - The Chicago Blaze will open the 2005 season by playing the defending NWBL Champion Dallas Fury on Saturday night and then turn around and play the 2004 runner-up Colorado Chill the following day when they open at home. "It certainly doesn't get any more difficult than this," said Blaze General Manager Robert Graham. "We have our work cut out for us, but I am confident that the team will be ready."

The Blaze played two exhibition games last weekend, losing both to the Colorado Chill. But Blaze officials got just what they wanted, a chance to see the young players and the new additions in action. "Everyone on the team found out quickly that this league is tough. We saw some really good things demonstrated by our young players and we identified some areas that we needed to work on. But, those games are behind us and now it starts for real," said Graham.

The Blaze will get a boost this weekend when Olympian Tamika Catchings returns to the starting line-up. She will be joined by her Indiana Fever (WNBA) teammates Ebony Hoffman and Coretta Brown. Sunday's home opener will be played at North Central College's Merner Field House at 3PM. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 1-866-731-2255 or via the internet at www.nwbl.com/blaze.

The NWBL showcases professional women basketball players from across the nation, including players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) who choose to stay in the U.S. to play during the off-season. 2005 teams include the Birmingham Power, CHICAGO BLAZE, Colorado Chill, Dallas Fury, Lubbock Hawks, and the San Jose Spiders.
