With the fourth overall selection in the 2004 NWBL Draft, the Chicago Blaze selected Indiana Fever (WNBA) center Olympia Scott-Richardson. Scott-Richardson, who starred at Stanford University ('98), missed the entire 2003 WNBA season with a knee injury sustained competing internationally. During the 2002 WNBA season, Scott-Richardson started all 31 games and averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds. The Blaze selected former University of Washington star Jamie Redd (Univ. of Washington / WNBA Seattle Storm) with their second selection. Natasha Pointer (Whitney Young High School / Rutgers University) and Amanda Osburn (North Central College, IL) were chosen in the third and fourth rounds.

"We're happy about the players we've been able to secure thus far. And we're confident the fans will be excited about this group and the remaining additions to the roster." said Head Coach Cheryl Littlejohn. The Chicago Blaze is continuing the process of securing commitments from additional players, with announcements to be made within the next three weeks.

Other notable selections in the draft were stars Cynthia Cooper (NWBL Houston Stealth / WNBA Houston Comets), WNBA finals MVP Ruth Riley (Colorado Chill / WNBA Detroit Shock) and Cheryl Ford (Tennessee Fury / WNBA Detroit Shock). Notable players who competed during the 2003 NWBL season included Sheryl Swoopes, Swin Cash, Becky Hammon, Sue Bird and Tina Thompson.

The NWBL showcases professional women basketball players from across the nation; including players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) who choose to stay in the U.S. to play during the off-season. The 2004 season will run from January 11 through March 31. The Blaze will play its home games at North Central College - Merner Fieldhouse.
