Upper Marlboro, MD - February 12, 2008. The Chesapeake Tide of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) announced their 2008 training camp roster, which includes 13 returning players from last season's playoff team, several newcomers with professional indoor football experience, and others from top college programs.
Headlining the group of 35 attending training camp are ten starters from last season's Tide team, which finished their inaugural season at 7-5 and earned a playoff date with the eventual league champions, the Rochester Raiders. Returning starters are: Joe Able, Leonte Collins, Mike Fitzgerald Jr., Robert Hennings, Sammie Jenkins, Mike Jones, Noble Jones, Savon McLemore, Darryl Overton Jr., and Kyle Postell.
Also attending camp are several players with pro experience, including former Tide players Lavon Copeland, Daryl Disbrow, and Ron Garner, as well as, Clay Powell, who suited up for the Fort Wayne Fusion of the Arena Football 2 (af2) League last season. James Brockington, Eric Gaines, and Joe Urso who played for the Baltimore Blackbirds last season, have also been invited to camp.
Top newcomers include Linebacker/Defensive End Jamar Atkinson (6'2", 245), a Washington D.C. native and a 2001 PrepStar All-Atlantic Region Selection while playing for Garfield High School. Atkinson started his college career playing for SUNY-Morrisville and was named First-Team 2003 NJCAA All-American and 2003 Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his college career playing his junior and senior years for the Syracuse Orangemen, playing in all 12 games as a senior. Also, Capital Heights resident Dale Williams (6'1", 170), who holds the Hudson Valley Community College record, with four interceptions in a game, will be suiting up at defensive back.
"Coach Steeple and his staff have done an excellent job assembling a training camp roster, which includes a good balance of veteran players and new talent. This year's camp promises to be very competitive. The roster also represents the entire Chesapeake region with 19 players from the D.C. metro area and 13 from the Baltimore area; it is truly a hometown team," stated Tide General Manager John Wolfe.
