Checkers Sign Jakaitis, Trade McKee

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has signed goaltender Jeff Jakaitis and traded goaltender David McKee to the Bakersfield Condors for future considerations.

Jakaitis, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, played 36 games for the Columbia Inferno last season compiling a record of 12-14-6. The Rochester, MN native held a .909 save percentage with a 2.92 goals against average and two shutouts. Jakaitis played three seasons of NCAA hockey for Lake Superior State University dressing in 100 games. In his final collegiate season, Jakaitis posted a robust .931 save percentage with a 2.31 goals against average and three shutouts.

McKee's trade comes after his rights were acquired from the Phoenix Roadrunners on Aug. 7 in exchange for forward Colin Sinclair.

The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
