Checkers Agree to Terms with Kenny Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Kenny Smith.

Smith, 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, hails from Stoneham, Mass. Last season, he suited up in 53 games for the Checkers scoring three goals, six assists for nine points while accumulating 56 penalty minutes. During the 2007-08 campaign, the Edmonton Oilers 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft third round pick received call-ups to the American Hockey League with both the Providence Bruins and Springfield Falcons.

Wilkinson is happy the Harvard University graduate is coming back for a third season, "Kenny is a very reliable defenseman and is a big part of our team chemistry."

The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
