Chattanooga Steamers News Release
Chattanooga, TN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) Chattanooga professional basketball team has announced that the team's name will be the CHATTANOOGA STEAMERS. The team begins play in November. According to John Tyner, President and General Manager, "Chosen with the history of Chattanooga in mind, the name evokes the history of the river boats which plied the Tennessee River during the nineteenth century. These shallow draft boats were the lifeblood of Chattanooga in the early years of its history, delivering and shipping goods to and from the area. The riverboats, which prominently spewed steam from large smokestacks located atop below deck boilers, are also incorporated in the team's new logo, which will be available to fans in the form of T-shirts and other apparel."
Tyner was encouraged by the response to the new name stating that the name was a favorite of interested persons taking part in naming the team. "The response to the name, "Steamers," was overwhelmingly favorable by those involved in packing the name," added Tyner.
The Chattanooga Steamers will hold their inaugural season tryout camps in July and August with the season beginning in November and will play at least 18 home games in Chattanooga. For more information, email John Tyner at john@teamtyner.com or visit www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
