Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Round Rock, TX - Clay Mortensen twirled six shutout innings while Matt Fields and Jesus Flores each knocked in two runs to lead Omaha to a 7-1 win over Round Rock Monday night at Dell Diamond. The Storm Chasers improved to 30-28 overall, including an 11-4 mark against the Express, and remain 1 1/2 games behind Oklahoma City in the American Conference North Division.
Round Rock put runners at second and third base with nobody out in the first inning but Mortensen worked out of the jam by striking out Brad Snyder, J.P. Arencibia and Jared Hoying in succession. The Chasers then manufactured a run in the second to take the lead for good when Carlos Peguero doubled, stole third base and scored on a Fields ground out. The visitors loaded the bases in the fourth and received a sacrifice fly from Fields that plated Jimmy Paredes and advanced the other two runners which would turn out to be huge when former Omaha infielder Jason Donald committed a throwing error on a Flores grounder that permitted Brian Bocock and Peguero to score to make it a 4-0 game.
Christian Colon singled with one out in the seventh, stole second and scored on a base hit by Johnny Giavotella that pushed the lead to five and knocked Round Rock starter Justin Germano out of the game after he had allowed seven hits while walking two and striking out four. Flores finished the scoring with a two-out, two-run home run in eighth giving Paulo Orlando one more at-bat and the Brazilian outfielder took advantage of his last chance by legging out an infield hit to extend his road hitting streak to 30 games.
Mortensen gave up four hits, walked one and struck out six to earn the win and has now spun 11 scoreless innings in his first two starts of the season. Spencer Patton took over and kept the hosts off the board until there were two outs in the ninth when he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Arencibia to score. The right-hander gave up two hits, walked one and fanned four to nail down his 11th save of the year.
The series and road trip concludes Tuesday night Omaha with left-hander Ryan Verdugo taking the hill against Round Rock righty Phil Irwin. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
