Charlotte Takes a 1-0 Win against the Port City Team

Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence hosted the Wilmington Hammerheads at Ramblewood Stadium, Saturday night at 7pm.

Wilmington began the match aggressive towards NC rival Charlotte, with #91 Jermie Lynch firing out of the gate.

The rival between the two teams brings creates a heartfelt and soulful match between the two teams. Charlotte began the game providing the first opportunity to score in the third minute, with a stop from Wilmington's goalkeeper #16 Eric Ati.

The first corner of the night happened for Wilmington with Lynch's hunger to get into the 18 yard where Binns took the corner. Lynch took a header from Binns' corner to go over the net, creating the first threatening offensive attempt from Wilmington of the match.

Wilmington's #7 Austin Martz provided good offensive pressure at the start of the match, presenting a few opportune angles for the Port City team.

After a scuffle between #6 Liam Miller and a few Charlotte players, the first 11 minutes have created heat between the two rival teams in the final Southern Derby Cup match.

In the 18th minute, Lynch had a close attempt to score with a save by Charlotte's goalkeeper #1 Cody Mizell with a save.

As the first half continued, the rival teams continued neck and neck, fighting for a goal. Charlotte's #8 Caleb Calvert continued to press Ati; while Miller continued to set up opportunities for Wilmington's offense.

In the 25th minute, #25 Zev Taublieb received the first yellow card of the match as he unintentionally tackled a Charlotte player in Wilmington's defensive end. Although his yellow card resulted in no goal, a few minutes later, #6 Jun Marques Davidson took down Miller at midfield resulting in a free kick for Wilmington.

31st minute, Binns received a free kick 21 yards from Charlotte's goal. Binns took the free kick resulting in too much power and a missed opportunity, going wide to the right of the goal. Wilmington is known for their threat with set-up plays such as this opportunity; despite Binns' wide setup.

Nearing the end of the first half, Charlotte and Wilmington continue to hold a score of 0-0. Both teams played strong in the first half, presenting opportunities, with each team resulting in stronger defensive strategies.

Binns received Wilmington's second yellow card of the match in the 42nd minute for an aggressive foul in Wilmington's defensive end.

With two minutes of stoppage time, the first half ended in a 0-0 score.

Starting the second half off with both teams neck and neck. #10 Jorge Herrera took a free kick in the 58th minute with a deflection retrieved by Ati.

Martz missed an open net in the 61st minute shooting the ball high. In the 62nd minute, Ati made an incredible save when Charlotte fired a low diving shot.

It wasn't until the 64th minute when Charlotte's #9 Brian Brown scored a beautiful goal with a hard strike on the ground to the left corner, leaving Ati with a slim chance to save the goal.

After Charlotte's goal, Lynch received the third yellow card for Wilmington in the 67th minute.

Nearly ten minutes later, in the 76th minute, Ati made a diving save with a shot by Calvert; again testing Wilmington. Herrera had a breakaway and a one-v-one with Wilmington's goalkeeper, Ati made a quick and dangerous decision to come out of the box and deflect the ball away.

In the 87th minute #4 Michael Mecham received Wilmington's fourth yellow card.

As the second half came to a close, Charlotte walked away with a 1-0 win over the Wilmington team who put up a great fight. Head coach Mark Briggs stated, " It's a game of chances, and when you don't take chances you don't win games."
