With the Sting trailing by five (63-58) with 48 seconds remaining, Jia Perkins connected on a turnaround jumper with 16 seconds left to pull the Sting within three. Chasity Melvin hit 1-of-2 free throws to build the Mystics lead back to four before Perkins connected on a second jumper to cut the lead to one with four seconds remaining. Temeka Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws to push Washington's lead to two (65-63) before one last attempt by Kelly Mazzante at the buzzer came up short. Tangela Smith recorded a season-high 25 points while Helen Darling added 11 points and seven assists for Charlotte.

The Monarchs spoiled Muggsy Bogues' coaching debut as they defeated the Sting 76-58. The Sting got out to a quick start building a 10-5 lead. Sacramento outscored the Sting 18-5 over the next 9:17 to build the eight-point lead. The Monarchs extended their lead to 17 with 9:16 left in the game before the Sting cut the lead to eight with 5:58 remaining. Sacramento responded with a 13-3 run to end the game. Tammy Sutton-Brown recorded 13 points to pace the Sting while Adrienne Goodson and Tangela Smith each added 11.

It took two overtime periods, but the Sting snapped their 10-game losing streak and gave Muggsy Bogues his first win with an 82-73 win over the Detroit Shock. The Shock led 43-35 at halftime and built their largest lead (58-49) with 6:45 left in the game. The Sting responded with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to one. Trailing by two with 35.2 seconds left, Tammy Sutton-Brown connected on a lay-up to tie the score at 65. Detroit's Cheryl Ford then missed two free throws with .2 seconds left to send the game into overtime. In the first overtime, Sheri Sam hit two free throws with 40.2 seconds remaining to tie the score at 71. A second overtime was forced as Sam and Detroit's Deanna Nolan missed field goals. In the second overtime, the Sting connected on 5-of-6 field goals to outscore the Shock 11-2. Sam finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Tangela Smith added 22 for the Sting.
STING NEWS AND NOTES
STING NAME MUGGSY BOGUES HEAD COACH
On August 3, the Sting appointed Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues as the team's head coach. Bogues is the sixth head coach in Sting history and is a familiar figure in Charlotte. The 5-3 point guard enjoyed a 14-year NBA playing career, including nine-plus years in Charlotte, where he was an original member of the Hornets in 1988 after being selected in the Expansion Draft.
Bogues recorded his first win as a head coach on August 6 as the Sting defeated the Detroit Shock 82-73 in double overtime.

Aug. 12 Faith and Family Night - The Sting will host Faith and Family Night on Friday, August 12 as they take on the New York Liberty. Musical group Anointed will perform a postgame concert.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Tuesday, August 9 - at Detroit 7:30 p.m. - The Palace of Auburn Hills
The Sting complete a home-and-home series with the Shock as they travel to the Palace of Auburn Hills. The season series between the Shock and the Sting is tied at one game apiece. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Sting defeated the Shock 82-73 in double overtime on August 6. In the first meeting on June 10, the Shock recorded a 69-55 victory over the Sting. The Shock are led by WNBA All-Star Deanna Nolan who averages 16.7 points and 3.7 assists. Cheryl Ford anchors the Shock in the paint posting 10.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Friday, August 12 - vs. New York 7:00 p.m. - Charlotte Coliseum
The Sting return home to face the New York Liberty on Friday. New York currently is in the midst of the Eastern Conference playoff race sitting in fourth place with a 13-13 record. The Sting currently hold a 1-0 lead in the season series. In the first meeting between the teams on June 25, the Sting defeated the Liberty 67-61. Tammy Sutton-Brown, Tangela Smith, and Dawn Staley each scored 16 points while Sheri Sam added 12 to lead the Sting, who shot 51.0% from the floor.
Sunday, August 14 - at New York 4:00 p.m. - Madison Square Garden
The Sting complete the second half of a home-and-home series with the Liberty as they play in Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Guard Becky Hammon averages 14.1 points and 4.3 assists to lead the Liberty. Center Ann Wauters also averages in double figures with 13.7 points and leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds.
EARL CURETON NAMED ASSISTANT COACH
On Saturday, August 6, the Sting added Earl Cureton as an assistant coach on Muggsy Bogues' staff. Cureton, a 12-year NBA veteran, teamed with Bogues for two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets and appeared in all 82 games during the Hornets' inaugural season in 1988-89.
STING MAKE TRADE
On August 1, the Sting acquired a 2006 first round draft pick, forward Kristen Rasmussen and guard/forward Adrienne Goodson from the Houston Comets in exchange for point guard Dawn Staley and a 2006 second round draft pick.
GO GO GO GOODIE
In her first two games with the Sting, Adrienne Goodson has had an immediate impact averaging 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. In her first game with the team, she posted season-highs in points (11) and rebounds (7).
SAM GOES DOUBLE
On August 6, Sheri Sam posted her first double-double of the season with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. She also posted career-highs in free throws made (10) and free throws attempted (13).
TWO FOR TWENTY
In addition to Sam's 26 points, Tangela Smith added 22 points in the Sting's 82-73 win over Detroit. It was the first time this season the Sting have had two players score 20-plus points. The last time the Sting had two players score 20-plus points was August 2, 2003 against Los Angeles.
STING ON TV
WJZY UPN-46 will broadcast the Sting's season finale against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, August 27 at 6 p.m.

"The Sting: A New Direction" radio special will air on Wednesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. on WNMX Mix 106.1 FM.

BOBCATS COMPLETE TRADES
On August 2, the Bobcats completed two trades acquiring Jake Voskuhl from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a 2007 conditional second round draft pick. In addition, the Bobcats acquired a future second round draft pick from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Jason Hart.
