Charlotte Sting News Release

The Charlotte Sting announced today that they have signed 5'10 guard Sophia Witherspoon. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Sophia Witherspoon not only adds depth to our roster at both guard positions but has also proven to be a great scorer in this league." said General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey.

Witherspoon, a seven-year WNBA veteran, has seen action in 207 games, averaging 10.7 points and 1.5 assists with New York, Portland and Los Angeles. Witherspoon joins Andrea Stinson as the only players on the roster that played in the WNBA's inaugural year in 1997.

Drafted in the second round (11th overall) of the 1997 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty, Witherspoon spent three seasons in New York where she led the team in scoring in both the 1997 (14.5 ppg) and 1998 (13.8 ppg) season. After finishing her third season with the Liberty, Witherspoon was selected in the second round (fifth overall) of the WNBA Expansion Draft by the Portland Fire on December 15, 1999. A member of the Fire for two seasons, Witherspoon averaged 14.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 63 games for the club. Traded to Los Angeles with Nikki Teasley in exchange for Gergana Slavtcheva and Ukari Figgs on April 19, 2002, Witherspoon spent the past two seasons with the Sparks. A member of the 2002 WNBA Championship Team, Witherspoon averaged four points in 54 games for Los Angeles.

A 1991 graduate of the University of Florida, Witherspoon was an All-SEC selection as a senior. In three years with the Gators, she averaged 15.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in 85 contests.

The Charlotte Sting will open their eighth season of WNBA action on Friday, May 21 at the Charlotte Coliseum as they host the four-time WNBA champion Houston Comets. Season Ticket Plans begin at $102. If you can't make all 17 home games, check out our eight-game Weekend Plans that begin at $88 or ask about Flex Packages and Group Tickets. Fans interested in purchasing tickets should call 704-424-WNBA or log on to www.charlottesting.com for more information and a full season schedule.
