Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps by a score of two goals to none tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,006. It was the Battery's third victory in a row and forward Usiel Vasquez also notched his third straight game-winning goal.
With the win Charleston improves to 5-6-2, 17 points and climbs to fourth position in the USL First Division. Vancouver drops to 5-5-3, 17 points but remains in third spot.
The Battery started brightly and tested Vancouver goalkeeper Mike Franks in the 13th minute. Defender Tim Karalexis made a probing run forward but his hard right-footed shot was parried around the post by Franks.
In the 21st minute Charleston broke the deadlock. The ball was played long into the box to Vasquez who nodded it down to midfielder Josh Smith. Smith was tackled as he shot and the squirted out to Vasquez who fired past Franks and into the goal.
The Whitecaps recorded their first shot of the game in the 51st minute as former Battery midfielder Ryan Trout broke down the left side. He managed to get a shot on target but Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle was well-positioned and made the save.
In the 66th minute Charleston put the game beyond Vancouver's reach with a second goal. Substitute winger Troy Lesesne dribbled past defender Josue Mayard on the left flank. He swept a cross to the back post for Jesus Martinez who placed a left-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner.
In the 75th minute Doyle preserved his shut-out snuffing out a Jason Jordan breakaway with a diving block save at the edge of the six-yard box.
