Whitecaps lose 3-2 to Atlanta on the Road
June 19, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Whitecaps opened a four-game road trip on Saturday, with a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks. All five goals were scored in a wild first half, including three goals in the first nine minutes. Atlanta jump to a 2-0 lead, then Vancouver battled back to tie on goals by Dave Morris, and a penalty kick by Steve Klein. But then Atlanta defender Adilson De Lima headed in a goal nine minutes before the half, and that stood up as the winner.
Vancouver finished the game with ten men after recently signed strike Ian Fuller was ejected in his Whitecaps debut, after receiving his second yellow card of the game at 86'. Despite being a man down, the Caps pressed in the closing stages, and were denied three appeals for penalty kicks in injury time by referee Brian D'Amato.
With the loss, Vancouver's record drops to 5-2-2 for 17 points, as they remain in third place in the USL First Division, a point behind the Portland Timbers, although the Caps still have two games in hand.
The Whitecaps now head off immediately to South Carolina for a game Sunday against the 4-6-2 Charleston Battery. On Wednesday they face the Puerto Rico Islanders, and then return to the West Coast for a home-and-home clash with the Seattle Sounders, with games Saturday, June 25 at Qwest Field, and then Sunday, June 26 at Swangard.
