Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Orlando FL Saturday for a 7:30 PM match versus Orlando City (Sports Radio 1450 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com). This is the Battery's third USL PRO match of the season after a week's hiatus; the Battery tied 1-1 with Orlando in the season opener on March 22 and then tied 2-2 with the Richmond Kickers in its last game on March 29.
Charleston Battery striker Mamadou Diouf gave Charleston a 1-0 lead in the season opener versus Orlando but Orlando City fought back with Austin daLuz providing the equalizer.
Saturday's game is the 13th all-time meeting between the teams. The Battery has had limited success in the games so far with an all-time time record of 1-9-2.
In 2013 the Battery played Orlando twice in the regular season tying 1-1 at Blackbaud Stadium and losing 2-1 in the reverse fixture played in Orlando. After progressing to the USL PRO semifinals the Battery were eliminated by Orlando losing 3-2 in a game played at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Orlando defeated the Charlotte Eagles 7-4 in the title match winning its second USL PRO championship. In the past four years only two teams have won USL championships, Charleston Battery (2010 & 2013) and Orlando City (2011 & 2013).
Orlando City has already begun its squad preparation for the 2015 MLS season and has signed several players with MLS experience in advance of its final USL PRO season. Defender Brad Rusin and forward Corey Hertzog both join Orlando from MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps while midfielder Yordany Alvarez comes to Orlando from MLS's Real Salt Lake. Orlando City are the official USL PRO affiliate of MLS's Sporting Kansas FC.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have a full team to select from on Saturday with defender Quinton Griffith returning to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.
The Battery's next home game is on Friday, April 18 versus the New York Red Bulls reserves with kick off at Blackbaud Stadium set for 7:30 PM ($10-$18, (843) 971-GOAL (4625) / charlestonbattery.com).
