Charleston Battery Held by College of Charleston in Pre-Season Scrimmage

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery was held to a 0-0 tie by the College of Charleston in a pre-season scrimmage on Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point. The Battery were twice denied by the woodwork but the College of Charleston also came close with a shot cleared off the line in the late going.

On a warm afternoon at Patriots Point both sides struggled to create chances in the first half. The Battery came closest to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half-time as striker Jose Cuevas drifted past a defender but then saw his driven effort cannon back off the near post.

Charleston were in the ascendency after the break and midfielder Jarad van Schaik saw a right footed effort curl just wide of the post in the 53rd minute.

Five minutes later the Battery had another chance to strike as Dane Kelly found himself in space twenty yards out after one of the College defenders had fallen in the build-up. Kelly hit a hard left footed shot that struck the crossbar before being deflected to safety.

The Cougars fought hard to keep the Battery off the scoresheet and would have snatched a winner ten minutes from time but Battery captain Colin Falvey cleared a shot off the line.

The Charleston Battery pre-season continues this Saturday with a 6 PM game versus the Wilmington Hammerheads at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island. The game is a rematch of the 2012 USL PRO championship game that the Battery won 1-0 earning Charleston its fourth USL championship. Saturday's game will also feature a Charleston Battery Junior Jamboree on the stadium back-field with Charleston Jump Castles, Blackbeard's Cove Putt-Putt, mini-soccer games, face-painting and more. In addition to the fun on the back field there will also be a children's Easter Egg hunt on the stadium field at half time plus a special Mascot Soccer game with some of your favorite area mascots!
