Charleston Battery News Release
Plant City, FL. The Charleston Battery lost to VSI Tampa Bay by a score of four goals to two Saturday night at Plant City Stadium. The Battery conceded four unanswered goals before Heviel Cordoves and Jose Cuevas both scored but it was too little too late as Tampa held on for the win.
With the win VSI Tampa Bay (8-6-3) pulls level with the Charleston Battery (7-5-6) for a share of sixth place in the USL PRO standings; the top eight teams advance to the post-season.
Charleston started poorly and conceded three goals in an eight minute first half spell. Former Battery midfielder Tony Donatelli rifled home the first in the 11th minute with Josh Rife adding a second goal one minute later.
Tampa scored a third in the 19th minute with Chad Burt converting a penalty kick. VSI put the game beyond doubt on the hour mark with another former Battery player Sallieu Bundu scoring with a volleyed finish.
Charleston forward Heviel Cordoves headed home from a Dane Kelly cross to make it 4-1 in the 63rd minute and Jose Cuevas converted a stoppage-time penalty as the Battery lost consecutive games for the first time this season.
The Charleston Battery returns to Blackbaud Stadium on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game versus the Dayton Dutch Lions (Sports Radio 1450 AM).
