Chain Saws, Bobbles & Fireworks; Whitecaps Release 2008 Schedule
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Fireworks, bobbleheads and visits from Mad Chad and the Human Slinky highlight the West Michigan Whitecaps 2008 schedule which was unveiled today by the organization. While fans watch the team pursue a sixth Midwest League Championship on the field, they'll be treated to a fabulous line-up of entertainment before and after each game.
The defending back-to-back Midwest League Champions open their 15th season on the road against South Bend on April 3. The 'Caps will play on the newly resodded field at Fifth Third Ballpark for the first time on Monday, April 7 at 6:35 p.m. when they take on the Great Lakes Loons.
The Whitecaps schedule includes three School Days games - Wednesday, May 7 vs. Kane County and Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29 vs. South Bend. The May 29th game is also the sixth annual Peanut Free Day. The special 11 a.m. start time on School Days games allows for field trips as the school year nears an end. Standard gametimes for 2008 are 6:35 p.m. Mon.- Fri. (April/May); 2 p.m. Sat.- Sun. (April/first half of May); 7 p.m. Mon.- Sat. (June-Sept.); and 2 p.m. Sunday (June-Sept.)
School Days are not the only fan favorite making a return in 2008. Farm Bureau Insurance Fireworks are always a popular promotion and this year, fans will be treated to 20 shows, a new high for the Whitecaps. Altogas Thrifty Thursdays, with $2 beers, $2 pretzels, $2 Pepsi products and 2 hot dogs for $2, will also return in 2008. After each Thursday game, fans can also enjoy live music at the post-game parties on the Miller Lite House Deck.
"We're really excited about the 2008 schedule," said Whitecaps Promotions Coordinator Brian Oropallo. "We've spent the last couple of months looking for new entertainment and fine-tuning our promotions schedule. We want to make sure every night at Fifth Third Ballpark is an event. I think the fans are going to love what we have planned."
Some of the new entertainment Oropallo has uncovered includes chain saw juggler Mad Chad (Tuesday, August 12) and The Amazing Christopher (Monday, July 14) who uses his four life size puppets to recreate classic '70s songs and dances, including the YMCA. Other acts making an appearance at Fifth Third Ballpark in 2008 include Quick Change (Tuesday, August 26), Myron Noodleman (Friday, June 27), Rubberboy (Tuesday, June 10), The Human Slinky (Tuesday, July 1) and The Famous Chicken (Wednesday, July 2).
Heads will be bobbling this season at Fifth Third Ballpark as the 'Caps plan to give away several bobbleheads, including a back-to-back championship Cameron Maybin and Gorkys Hernandez bobblehead (Friday, April 18), Joe Staley bobblehead (Friday, May 16) and a special Dave Rozema Karate Kick bobbleleg (Wednesday, July 9). The Fan Vote bobblehead will also return in 2008. Campaigning and voting will begin in April and the winner's bobblehead will be given to fans before the game on Tuesday, August 26.
