CFL names players of the week
Published on October 19, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Offensive Player of the Week
RB â Joffrey Reynolds #32
Calgary Stampeders
Highlights
Reynolds displayed shifty, explosive running that produced 189 rushing yards.
Game Notes:
I liked his patience at the line and the balance he needed to make positive yards after the initial contact. Reynolds showed his tough instinctive running style with the ability to simply outrun any lateral pursuers. The Stampeders can be a very competitive unit and Reynolds plays a major part.
1st Runner Up: Sylvain Girard #3, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: Troy Davis #32, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Judge: Ellison Kelly
Defensive Player of the Week
DB â Joey Boese #23
Calgary Stampeders
Highlights
Boese demonstrated outstanding defensive play including five (5) tackles, two (2) special teams tackles and one (1) momentum-altering interception.
Game Notes:
Boese is not a big guy, but he played a tough physical game. He read the defence quickly and reacted with smart heads up plays. He stepped up and took on blockers when necessary and filled holes, moving laterally with ease.
1st Runner Up: Barrin Simpson #51, BC Lions
2nd Runner Up: Reggie Hunt #9, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Judge: Ellison Kelly
Lineman of the Week
DT â Johnny Scott #72
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Highlights
Scott is a great force along the defensive line. His game this week included four (4) tackles, one (1) sack and tons of pressure.
Game Notes:
Scott is definitely a power player and stands out in the middle of the Tiger-Cats tough D-line. This guy is unpredictable as he'll knock the decal right off his opponents' helmet. Scott pushed blockers back into the pass pocket and disrupted the passer all game. I was impressed with all parts of his dominant, robust play.
1st Runner Up: Garrett Smith #96, Calgary Stampeders
2nd Runner Up: Tyrone Williams #96, BC Lions
Judge: Ellison Kelly
Special Teams Player of the Week
RB â Corey Holmes #19
Saskatchewan Roughriders
Highlights
Holmes had a total of 372 all purpose yards, which included 99 pass receiving yards, 64 rushing yards, 136 punt return yards and 73 yards on kickoff returns.
Game Notes:
Holmes was required to take on additional duties because of an early injury in the Riders' backfield. He delivered big time, making him a strong candidate for special teams and offensive player of the week. I think his game total of 372 yards speaks for itself.
1st Runner Up: Dennis Mavrin #38, Saskatchewan Roughriders
2nd Runner Up: Arland Bruce #5, Toronto Argonauts
Judge: Ellison Kelly
