CFL and Offsetters to Make 99th Grey Cup a Climate Friendly Event

VANCOUVER - The Canadian Football League is proud to continue the CFL Green Drive program for the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia. The CFL Green Drive program is a commitment to staging a climate friendly Grey Cup game.

"The Grey Cup is Canada's largest single day sporting event and as such, we feel that it's important to take measures towards making it climate friendly," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

Through Offsetters, Canada'sleading carbon management solutions provider, the CFL will measure and offset greenhouse gas emissions produced by staging this year's Grey Cup. The CFL will offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated from the electricity and heating of B.C. Place on game day, and the emissions associated with air travel to Vancouver by the teams and league officials. The emissions generated from the 99th Grey Cup game will be offset with an investment in high quality carbon offset projects sourced from renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Canada.

The CFL also encourages its fans to do their part by considering ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprints. One example that can reduce fans' carbon emissions is by taking public transportation to and from the festival and the game. For other tips and suggestions, fans can visit www.CFL.ca/greendrive .

"Thousands of fans will be enjoying Grey Cup festivities and our championship game in Vancouver this week," said Cohon. "It's important that we all consider our impact on the environment and do what we can to help minimize our footprint."

"We're happy to be working with the CFL to make Canada's largest annual sporting event climate friendly," said Kari Grist, senior vice president marketing and client engagement, Offsetters. "Vancouver is a city known for its ambitious sustainability agenda and low greenhouse gas emissions per capita, and it's an honour to help the CFL share their green story on the national stage."

The 99th Grey Cup, which is recognized as a Climate Friendly event by Offsetters, will be played on Sunday, November 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30pm PST.
