CF Montréal Enters Break with a 4-3 Victory
May 29, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - With over a third of the regular season completed, CF Montréal entered the international break with a 4-3 victory over FC Cincinnati on Saturday night at Stade Saputo.
The visitors opened the scoring thanks to Junior Moreno (12'), followed by three consecutive Montreal goals through Joel Waterman (21'), Romell Quioto (45'+4') and Mathieu Choiniere (46'). Alvaro Barreal then reduced the gap for Cincinnati (52') but a hand ball in the Cincinnati penalty box allowed Quioto to restore the two-goal lead with a spot kick (59').
Cincinnati managed to find the back of the net again via Junior Moreno's second of the night (63') but that would be the final strike of the evening.
CF Montréal will be off for the next three weeks as part of the FIFA international break. The Montrealers will be back at Stade Saputo on Saturday, June 18th at 7:30pm against Austin FC (TVA Sports, 91.9 Sports, TSN 690).
GAME NOTES
-Waterman's equalizing goal (his second of the season) tied CF Montréal's record for goals scored by a defender at 7. The record was set in 2013 and equalled in 2021.
-Quioto scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season. It was his second multipoint game with the Club.
-Kei Kamara earned his third assist this season on Mathieu Choinière's goal. It was his 50th assist in MLS.
-Heading into the international break, CF Montréal has the best attack in the Eastern Conference with 28 goals. The team is now 4-1-0 at Stade Saputo this season.
Post-game comments from head coach Wilfried Nancy, Joel Waterman and Victor Wanyama are available here.
WILFRIED NANCY
"Cincinnati gave us some problems with the way they played because they're very good at playing deep. I'm glad the guys found the resources to win this game. [...] Today we had to be better defensively. We had a good series where we conceded fewer goals. At the beginning of the year I was asked a lot of questions about our offensive animation and we are the best attack in the East For the moment, so much the better! Now I'm going to take a step back, because the goals we conceded are individual, collective, semi-collective adjustment errors. It was an odd game, as long as the victories arrive it's fine for the moment, but we will look into it."
JOEL WATERMAN
"We always have high-scoring games against Cincinnati. I don't know why. As a defender, I like to defend much better than we did tonight. Its good to get many defenders on the scoresheet. I want to be good in every area of the game. That means scoring goals and defending. I want to make sure I am the complete player. After that nine-game unbeaten streak, we didn't want to slide the other way. We took those two losses to heart and wanted to make sure we got the three points before a bit of rest."
VICTOR WANYAMA
"It's crazy scores against this team. Both home and away. Today is one of the games where we weren't really ourselves. Today we fought and hung on to the three points. Cincinnati have improved a lot. It was a tough game. It was important to win tonight and go on break with a positive note. Hopefully we can rest a little now, come back after and work hard."
