Central Hockey League, by the Numbers
Published on November 8, 2005 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The "average" Central Hockey League player stands a shade under six foot tall (71.92 inches), weighs 196.96 pounds, and is 25.49 years old, based on statistics compiled by the CHL front office from team rosters as of November 7th. At opposite ends of the spectrum in age are 2-time CHL Most Valuable Player Don Parsons from the Memphis RiverKings (who turns 37 in January), and Tulsa left winger Shawn Futers, who celebrated his 20th birthday six days ago. Both the shortest (5-4) and lightest (150 pounds) player in the CHL is Austin netminder Matt Barnes, twice named the CHL's Most Outstanding Goaltender. The tallest player in the CHL is Odessa forward/ defenseman Jeff Ewasko at 6-7, while Fort Worth defenseman Konrad Brand and Oklahoma City rearguard Jason Goulet are the heaviest, tipping the scales at 245 pounds each. Of note, two of the three youngest teams in the CHL (Wichita and Lubbock) lead their respective divisions, while the youngest (Fort Worth) and oldest (Bossier-Shreveport) share the lead in the Northeast. Rio Grande Valley, the tallest team in the CHL, leads the Southeast.
Nearly 80 (79.4) percent of the CHL is comprised of Canadians, with Ontario-born players accounting for 32.7 percent of the League. With 15 players in the CHL, Minnesota is the best represented American state, followed by Michigan (9) and New York (7).

CHL Team By Team Notes
AMARILLO GORILLAS
Season Record: 2-4-1, 5 points
This Week: Fri. @ LAR, Sat. vs CRP
Amarillo picked up two points over the weekend, dropping to third place in the Southwest Division though still sit just one point behind Lubbock and Odessa in the standings, after falling 4-2 to Wichita and 4-1 to Tulsa, but topping Lubbock 3-1. The weekend's op players for the Gorillas include Derek (3g,2a), Richie Hansen (PPG,2a), and goaltender Shawn Degagne (1-0-0, 51 saves, 2 goals against).
AUSTIN ICE BATS
Season Record: 2-6-0, 4 points
This Week: Thu. vs LAR, Sat. @ RGV, Sun. vs ODE
The Ice Bats picked up their second win in a shutout performance by goaltender Matt Barnes, blanking the Oilers 3-0, but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 5-3 loss to Lubbock the following night. RW John McNabb still leads the team in points with 9 (5g,4a) followed by Dave MacIntyre with 8 (4g,4a) and Gerald Tallaire with 7 (3g,4a). Sheldon Wenzel leads all rookies in PIMs with 39.
BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT MUDBUGS
Season Record: 5-2-1, 11 points
This Week: Fri. @ MEM, Sat. @ FTW
The Mudbugs split a two-game set with the Eagles last week, dominating 6-1 on Wed. and falling 5-3 on Fri., before dropping another tough game at Wichita. Brett Smith is tied for the league lead in goals with eight after his hat trick on Friday night and Dan Wildfong leads the team in scoring with four goals and ten assists (400th pro point on Sat.). The Mudbugs have scored a power play goal in all eight games this season.
COLORADO EAGLES
Season Record: 4-2-0, 8 points
This Week: Fri. @ RGV BOS, Sat. @ LAR
The Eagles split another two game series, this time with the Mudbugs, and are sitting in the exact same spot as last season with eight points out of a possible 12. Colorado has given up 16 power play goals already this season in just six games - last season they didn't give up the number 16 until their 34th game. Also out of whack, the Eagles have no one in the top 15 in scoring, but three players in the top five in penalties.
CORPUS CHRISTI RAYZ
Season Record: 3-3-0, 6 points
This Week: Thu. @ MEM, Fri. @ FTW, Sat. vs AMA
Unfortunate news for Corpus Christi as the team has placed leading scorer Jason Baird on IR for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. The Rayz struggled offensively in their last two games with Baird out of the lineup, scoring only four times in two weekend games. To counter this, veteran forward Dave Gilmore will come out of retirement and rejoin the team in time for their trip to Memphis and Fort Worth this week.
FORT WORTH BRAHMAS
Season Record: 5-1-1, 11 points
This Week: Fri. vs CRP, Sat. vs BOS
The Fort Worth Brahmas enjoyed a successful road trip this past weekend, winning a pair of games away from home to raise their record on the season to 5-1-1 and move into a first place tie atop the Northeast Division with the Mudbugs. Netminder Larry Sterling has been a large part of their winning ways and was named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week for his efforts, leading the League with a .934 save %.
LAREDO BUCKS
Season Record: 3-4-0, 6 points
This Week: Thu. @ AUS, Fri. vs AMA, Sat. vs COL
The Bucks will be ready for the weekend at home where they are 2-0-0, as opposed to 1-4-0 on the road so far this season. Top-scorer Brent Cullaton is near the top for the point scoring lead with 17 and blue-liner Serge Dube leads all CHL defensemen with nine assists. A backwards note of interest, thus far the Laredo Bucks lead the League in shorthanded goals (4), but have given up the most power play goals (16).
LUBBOCK COTTON KINGS
Season Record: 4-5-0, 8 points
This Week: Fri. @ ODE, Sat. vs OKC
Tuesday afternoon's win against Odessa put them two points ahead of the Jacks' for first in the Southwest Division going into Friday night's rematch. Lubbock is now unbeaten in their "Kids Day Game" contests with a perfect 5-0-0 record. Lance Leslie is off to another solid start this season and his win Sunday was his 70th as a member of the Kings in his career.
MEMPHIS RIVERKINGS
Season Record: 2-3-0, 4 points
This Week: Thu. vs CRP, Fri. vs BOS, Sat. @ WIC
Winger Don Parsons had five goals in the RiverKings two games this past weekend including his 16th RiverKings hat trick (33rd career) on Saturday night in Laredo. Memphis will need to find out how to finish games as they have been outscored in the third period 9-3 in their 5 games including 6-1 in this past weekend's games at Corpus Christi and Laredo.
ODESSA JACKALOPES
Season Record: 2-3-2, 6 points
This Week: Fri. vs LUB, Sat. vs WIC, Sun. @ AUS
The Jacks' were rested after only playing one game last week, a shootout loss to Rio Grande Valley, but fell 7-1 this afternoon to Lubbock. The Jackalopes added Defenseman Andrew Davis from Memphis and released defenseman Chad Blundy this past week. This week Odessa has another huge game against Lubbock (at home after being at Lubbock today) as well as a key match up with the Wichita Thunder.
OKLAHOMA CITY BLAZERS
Season Record: 1-5-0, 2 points
This Week: Wed. @ WIC, Fri. vs WIC, Sat. @ LUB
The Blazers would like to forget last weekend after losing third period leads on consecutive nights to fall to the SteelHounds 4-3 twice in two games. Tyler Fleck now sits first all-time in Blazers history with 228 minor penalties passing George Dupont on Saturday night. After consistently leading the league in shots on goal, the Blazers currently rank 13th this season and have been outshot in five of six games.
RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES
Season Record: 5-2-0, 10 points
This Week: Fri. vs COL, Sat. vs AUS
Rio Grande Valley pulled out a shootout win against Odessa a day after losing to Laredo to go .500 for the weekend. Bees' forwards Matic Kralj and Dwayne Hay both have 11 points to lead the team and goalie Evan Lindsay has been solid in net. The Killer Bees are currently second in the CHL on the power play (20.4%), but 13th on the penalty kill (79.0%) and are leading the league in first period goals with 12.
TULSA OILERS
Season Record: 4-2-0, 8 points
This Week: Fri. @ YNG, Sat. @ YNG
The Oilers took four of a possible six points last weekend, defeating Lubbock 3-2, dropping a 3-0 decision in Austin, and ending with a rousing 4-1 victory in Amarillo. Goaltender Chris King posted the two wins on the weekend for the Oilers, surrendering just three goals and defenseman Mario Joly played exceptional, notching two assists Friday followed by a hat trick and another helper on Sunday.
WICHITA THUNDER
Season Record: 5-1-0, 10 points
This Week: Wed. vs OKC, Fri. @ OKC, Sat. @ ODE, Sun. vs MEM
Once again, Wichita's four veterans had a huge weekend, combining for seven of the eight Thunder goals and a combined 18 points. Joe Blaznek and Jason Duda both had five points this weekend, while Travis Clayton and Daniel Tetrault had four points each. Sebastien Laplante has been phenomenal in net, going 5-0-0 and leading the team to two 1-goal wins last weekend over Amarillo and Bossier-Shreveport.
YOUNGSTOWN STEELHOUNDS
Season Record: 4-2-1, 9 points
This Week: Fri. vs TUL, Sat. vs TUL
The SteelHounds had a memorable first weekend posting two 4-3, third period, comeback victories over Oklahoma City. Right wing Jeff Christian had a weekend to remember scoring five goals with two assists in the two SteelHounds victories, and now leads the CHL in scoring with 15 points (8g,7a). Youngstown has scored a power play goal in each of the first seven games this season.
