JERMAINE BLACKBURN EARNS CBA NATIONAL CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Yakama guard earns triple-double over East Kentucky

The Continental Basketball Association is pleased to announce that Yakama Sun Kings guard Jermaine Blackburn is the CBA National Conference Player of the Week for the week ending January 27, 2008. This is the fifth time a Sun Kings player has earned this award this season, joining Desmond Ferguson, Jason Forte, Jason Sasser (twice) and Tim Ellis as Yakama Player of the Week award winners.

In two wins over the East Kentucky Miners this week, Blackburn score a triple-double in Yakama's 106-101 victory Friday night, amassing 18 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. The 6'5" all-star guard from Boise State was also instrumental in the Sun Kings' 105-95 triumph over the Miners on Saturday night.

Other players given consideration for National Conference Player of the Week include Aaron Cook, Butte Daredevils; Nate Green, Great Falls Explorers; Gordon Klaiber, Rio Grande Valley Silverados; Daryan Selvy, Oklahoma Cavalry.

NAT BURTON EARNS CBA AMERICAN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Second Patroon to earn award this year

The Continental Basketball Association is pleased to announce that Albany Patroons guard Nat Burton is the CBA American Conference Player of the Week for the week ending January 27, 2008. This is the second time a Patroons player has earned this award this season; Amal McCaskill previously won the Player of the Week award earlier this year.

Coming off the bench in two games against the Butte Daredevils, the 6'3" guard from Georgetown scored 51 points in two Patroons victories. On Thursday night, Burton tied with teammate Amal McCaskill with 21 points in Albany's 96-86 win over the Daredevils. Saturday night, Burton scored 30 points on his birthday to lead Albany to a 99-96 win over Butte.

Other players under consideration for the award included Albert White, Pittsburgh; Josh Pace, East Kentucky; and Sidney Holmes, Minot.

Jamario Moon of the Toronto Raptors will be the first NBA All-Star Game Slam Dunk participant who also participated in the CBA All-Star Slam Dunk competition (2006, 2007 with Albany) since Tim Legler (CBA's Omaha Racers, NBA's Washington Bullets) won both events in the mid-1990's.

CBA TEAM REPORTS

Albany Patroons (15-11, 101.0 QP, 3.80 AVG, 2nd place, American Conference) Returning to the Armory after a West Coast road trip, the Albany Patroons took care of the Butte Daredevils in a two-game series. In the first contest, a 96-86 [5-2] victory at the Armory, Amal McCaskill and Nat Burton each notched 21 points, while McCaskill added 12 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. McCaskill also had eight assists and two steals. Rashaad Powell and Jason "J-Bird" Williams scored 14 points apiece in the Albany victory. Albany completed the two-game sweep of the Daredevils Saturday night with a 99-96 [6-1] triumph in the Armory. Nat Burton scored 30 points on his birthday (one point shorter than his age), while Chad Timberlake notched 23 points with a trio of three-pointers. Jason "J-Bird" Williams' 20 points included 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Atlanta Krunk (9-19, 67.5 QP, 2.41 AVG, 5th place, American Conference) The Atlanta Krunk did not play this week.

Butte Daredevils (13-15, 93.0 QP, 3.32 AVG, 3rd place, National Conference) Despite being undermanned, player-coach Odell Bradley and the Butte Daredevils went into Albany to fight the Patroons in a tough series. In the first game Thursday night, the Daredevils lost 96-86 [5-2], but were able to cut a 51-37 halftime deficit down by taking the final two quarterpoints. Odell Bradley led the Daredevils with 32 points; Blake Sholberg's 8 rebounds were tops for the Copper City crew. After signing some new players, the Daredevils continued to play against the Patroons on Saturday night, but despite charging into the lead with a 33-18 first-quarter run, the Daredevils lost steam and fell 99-96 [6-1] to the Patroons. Odell Bradley hit 38 points to lead his team, while Carl Boyd's 8 rebounds were the most pulldowns by a Daredevil that night. Aaron Cook's 11 points included three steals.

East Kentucky Miners (16-15, 106.0 QP, 3.42 AVG, 4th place, American Conference) It was the Miners' turn to visit the Yakima Valley SunDome and try to take a win from the Yakama Sun Kings. No such luck. In the opener Friday night, the Miners remained close with the Sun Kings, but in the end, came up short in a 106-101 [5-2] loss. James "Boo" Jackson's 24 points, 15 rebounds and six steals held up well for the Pikeville quintet, while Josh Pace finished with 25 points, 8 rebounds and five assists in the Miners loss. The Miners tried to keep the momentum in their second matchup Saturday night with the Sun Kings, but fell in a 105-95 [5.5-1.5] defeat. Six Miners finished in double figures in scoring, led by Josh Pace's 18 points and James "Boo" Jackson's 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jason McLeish had 17 points and three steals.

Great Falls Explorers (8-19, 62.5 QP, 2.31 AVG, 4th place, National Conference) The Great Falls Explorers visited the McAllen Convention Center to take on the Rio Grande Valley Silverados - but the Lone Star State crew defeated the Explorers 114-98, with a victory that threatened to push the Explorers into 5th place in the CBA's National Conference. Mike Peeples led Great Falls with 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Sunday afternoon was a different story, as the Explorers held on for a 98-88 win [5.5-1.5] road win over the Silverados. Maurice Carter's 24 points, of which twelve came from beyond 3-point range, led the Explorers in scoring; one of Carter's 3-pointers in the final seconds of the fourth quarter helped to tie the fourth quarter and give each team half of the final quarterpoint. Jason Clark finished with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Minot Skyrockets (21-8, 136.5 QP, 4.71 AVG, 1st place, American Conference) The Skyrockets welcomed the Xplosion to the Launchpad for two games. On Thursday night, Minot took the first of the two-game series against Pittsburgh with a 118-103 [6-1] victory, as CBA All-Star Marshall Phillips notched 22 points in the win, while Sidney Holmes amassed a team-record 17 rebounds to go with his 11 points. The second game, on Friday night, saw the Skyrockets take another victory with a 119-100 [6-1] win against Pittsburgh. Ronnie Fields notched 31 points, including going 10-for-14 from the free-throw line. Kevin Milliner's 23 points were augmented with a trio of three-pointers. Sidney Holmes pulled down 12 rebounds, while Lee Scruggs blocked four shots.

Oklahoma Cavalry (11-13, 82.5 QP, 3.43 AVG, 2nd place, National Conference) The Cavalry's one contest of the week was a Sunday afternoon matchup in Lawton against the Pittsburgh Xplosion. With Curtis Haywood's 29 points leading the way, the Cavalry handed Pittsburgh a 108-94 [6-1] loss. Marvin Phillips had a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Daryan Selvy also notched a double-double of 19 points and 10 boards; twelve of Selvy's points came from 3-point range.

Pittsburgh Xplosion (18-15, 126.5 QP, 3.83 AVG, 3rd place, American Conference) With the Xplosion in a dogfight for second place in the CBA's American Division, Pittsburgh traveled to the Minot Municipal Auditorium for two games with the Skyrockets. The Thursday night clash saw the Xplosion fall 118-103 [6-1], despite 28 points from CBA All-Star John DeGroat and 23 points notched by Chaz McCrommon. Carl Krauser added 13 assists to go with his 18 points. The Xplosion were unable to win in the return match Friday night, losing 118-100 [6-1]. Tyrone Anderson led Pittsburgh with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds; Anderson also had four blocked shots and two steals. Darnell Miller (19 pts) and John DeGroat (18 pts) also had strong games for the Xplosion. The Xplosion's slide continued on their road trip, with a Sunday afternoon contest at Lawton against the Oklahoma Cavalry. Despite Albert White putting 23 points on the board, Pittsburgh tumbled 108-94 [6-1] for their third straight loss. Tyrone Anderson had 15 points, while John DeGroat's 13 points included eight rebounds.

Rio Grande Valley Silverados (5-26, 62.0 QP, 2.00 AVG, 5th place, National Conference)Derrick Rowland's first head coaching win was against the Great Falls Explorers. On Saturday night, Rowland's charges took their second home win with a 114-98 [6-1] victory over the Great Falls Explorers. "We finished tonight. We played some defense tonight," said Rowland to the McAllen Monitor. "We finished the game. That's been our biggest problem all year is closing out. When we don't turn the ball over, which we did not do, and when we play defense, which we did, we will come out on the winning end in most cases." Walt Waters had a double-double for the Silverados with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while All-Star Toby Smith added 22 points and eight boards. Sunday afternoon, however, was a different story, as although the Silverados lost a 98-88 [5.5-1.5] matchup against the Explorers, falling one half of a standings point behind the Explorers for the fourth and final playoff position in the National Conference. Trent Eager's 16 points were tops among the Silverados, while Gordon Klaiber finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds on the night.

Yakama Sun Kings (26-1, 156.5 QP, 5.79 AVG, 1st place, National Conference) The Sun Kings hosted the East Kentucky Miners for two games at the Yakima Valley SunDome. In the first contest Friday night, the weary Sun Kings fell behind on several occasions to the Pikeville visitors, but in the end, pulled another victory with a 106-101 [5-2] triumph. Jermaine Blackburn earned a triple-double of 18 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, while Desmond Ferguson led the team with 22 points. The Sun Kings earned the two-game sweep on Saturday with a 105-95 [5.5-1.5] win over East Kentucky. Three Sun Kings finished with double-doubles - Jason Sasser (24 pts, 11 rebs), Harvey Thomas (11 pts, 10 rebs) and Moochie Norris (14 pts, 14 assists), while Tim Ellis dropped 23 points in the cylinder.
