COACHES CONTINUE RUN THROUGH CBA RECORD BOOK
CBA Veteran Head Coaches Paul Woolpert and Chris Daleo are moving up the all-time records in many head coaching categories.
Woolpert has a head coaching record of 178-146 (.549%). The number of wins has vaulted him to 13th place all-time in CBA wins. Woolpert moved ahead of current Denver Nuggets coach George Karl (176-66). Next on the list for Woolpert is Ron Ekker with 184 wins. Paul has also coached in 324 games. This places him 13th overall and only 24 games behind John Treloar. Woolpert is also 14th in winning percentage (.549), moving him ahead of Tyler Jones.
Chris Daleo is also on the move in the CBA record books. Daleo is currently tied with Gary Youmans in wins (119) and is in 21st place all-time. By virtue of his .589 winning percentage, Daleo moves to 9th place all-time. Daleo is behind current Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Herb Brown (.601).

CBA ALUM COACH PHIL JACKSON NOMINATED FOR BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
On Dec. 19, 2006, the Los Angeles Lakers have nominated head coach Phil Jackson for inclusion into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Jackson, who won nine NBA Championship rings as an NBA head coach (three with the Los Angeles Lakers, six with the Chicago Bulls) began his coaching career in 1983 when he took over for Albany Patroons exiting coach Dean Meminger. In five years in the CBA, Jackson's Patroons won the 1984 CBA championship, and Jackson himself was named CBA Coach of the Year in 1985.
To be nominated for the Hall of Fame as a head coach, one must have coached for a minimum of 25 years; Jackson's five CBA seasons count toward that goal. If Jackson makes the Hall of Fame, he will be one of a select few CBA/Eastern League players and coaches to be so enshrined. The list of players and coaches, along with their years of enshrinement and CBA connections, are as follows:
- Paul Arizin '78, EPBL Camden Bullets 1962-65
- Rick Barry '87, CBA Fort Wayne Fury (coach), 1992-94
- Jim Boeheim '05, EPBL-EBA Scranton Miners / Apollos 1966-72
- Hubie Brown '06, EPBL, Rochester Colonels 1958-59
- John Chaney '01, EPBL Sunbury Mercuries, Williamsport Billies, 1950's-1960's
- Dave Cowens '91, CBA Bay State Bombardiers (coach), 1984-85
- George Gervin '96, CBA Quad City Thunder, 1990-91
- Hal Greer '82, CBA Philadelphia Kings (coach), 1980-81
- Buddy Jeannette '94, EPBL Baltimore Bullets (coach), 1958-61
- K.C. Jones '89, EPBL Hartford Capitols 1966-67
- Jack Ramsay '92, EPBL Harrisburg Caps, Sunbury Mercuries 1949-55
- Arnie Risen '98, EPBL Rochester Colonels (player-coach), 1958-59
- Isiah Thomas '00, CBA league owner 1999-2000
CBA ARENA: MELLON ARENA
Mellon Arena was originally built in 1961, and is one of the first sports arenas to feature a retractable roof. In addition to being the home arena of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, Mellon Arena's previous basketball tenants included the Pittsburgh Pipers (ABL) and Pittsburgh Condors (ABA), as well as the American Hockey League's Pittsburgh Hornets. Two sports-related movies have been filmed at Mellon Arena; the Jean-Claude Van Damme action thriller Sudden Death, and the basketball comedy cult classic The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.
Other interesting factoids about Mellon Arena; it hosted several WWE pay-per-view events; it was the home for the final New Year's Eve concert for Elvis Presley; and every so often the building will open up its roof (most recently at a James Taylor concert, when the singer performed the song "Up On the Roof"). The arena was originally built not for sports, but as the home structure for the Pittsburgh Light Opera Company.
