Gary's Jimmie Hunter Earns POW Honor
The Continental Basketball Association announced on Dec. 5 that Gary Steelheads guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter was named the CBA Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 28 through Dec. 4. Hunter earns the award for the first time in his two-year CBA career.
Hunter averaged 29.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in four games for the Steelheads last week, helping Gary jump into first place in the Eastern Conference with a league-best 32.5 quarter points, 4.1 QP average and a 5-3 record. Gary went 2-2 last week. Hunter put up 39 points on Dec. 3 in a 137-127 overtime victory over the Western Conference leading Dakota Wizards. Hunter connected on a season-high 15 field goals (24 attempts), while he posted 32 points on Nov. 30 in a 113-111 win at Albany. His 39-point total on Dec. 3 was one-point away from his season-high of 40 points on Nov. 20 vs. Rockford.
On the season, Hunter is third in the league in scoring with 26.1 ppg. and is eighth in assists with 5.0 apg. Besides leading Gary in these two categories, he also leads the Steelheads in steals (12), field goals made (79), free throws made (40), and free-throw percentage (80.0 pct.).
Gary has a league-best 3-1 road record. It hosts the Yakama Sun Kings on Tuesday, Dec. 6, then the Rockford Lightning on Thursday, Dec. 8. The Steelheads travel to Rockford on Sunday, Dec. 11.

Rockford's Chris Daleo Named CBA Coach of the Month
The Continental Basketball Association announced on Dec. 1 that Rockford Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo was named the League Coach of the Month for the month of November. The award marks the first monthly coaching honor of the season and the third such honor for Daleo, who is in his fourth year of guiding the Lightning.
For the month of November, Daleo helped put Rockford in first place of the Eastern Conference with a league-best 5-1 record, 28.0 quarter points, and 4.7 quarter-point average. Rockford posted a 2-1 home record and an impressive 3-0 road record. The Lightning have done well in close games by recording two-point, three-point, and two six-point victories. Rockford is second in the league in scoring at 115.2 points per game while it leads the league in field goals made (259). Daleo enters the month of December with an 88-62 career record at Rockford. He led the Lightning to a spot in the CBA Championship series last season, falling to Sioux Falls. He also coached the Eastern Conference to a victory in the CBA All-Star game a year ago, 114-110.
Daleo earned two Coach of the Month honors in 2003-03 while picking up the CBA Coach of the Year award that same season. He got his start in coaching basketball at Kishwaukee Junior College in Malta, Ill., where he was an assistant coach, then served as head coach and athletic director at Barat College in Lake Forest, Ill.
Rookie T.J. Thompson Has a Veteran Night
Albany guard and 2005 No. 1 draft pick T.J. Thompson scored a CBA season-high 53 points in a 102-101 victory over Gary on Nov. 27. Thompson scored more than half of the Patroons' total points and put up the most in a CBA game since Dakota's Melvin Sanders scored 54 against Rockford on March 13, 2005. The point total also bested the previous Albany record of 47 points by Vincent Askew vs. Pensacola (March 12, 1990). In fact, after researching by league office officials, Thompson recorded the highest point total EVER by any rookie in CBA history. For the season, Thompson is leading the league with 32.1 ppg.
Albany Patroons (2-5, 19.0 QP, 2.7 Avg., 3rd Eastern Conference)
Albany suffered two tough defeats last week. The first was a 113-111 OT home loss to Gary, followed by a 105-99 defeat at Yakama. In both cases Albany went into the fourth quarter with the score tied. Turnovers hurt the Patroons, comitting 25 and 22 respectively, in the past two games... 2005 No. 1 Draft pick T.J Thompson continues his strong play, averaging 24 ppg. last week. He collected 11 assists in the tough loss at Yakama... forward Carl Mitchell remained consistent, averaging 21 ppg. and 11 rebounds for the week... newcomer forward Michael Joiner has fit into the team structure nicely since his signing last week, contributing averages of 22.5 ppg., 6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in his first two games... Albany will play the Idaho Stampede for the first time this season at Idaho. It is the second of six consecutive road games for Coach Michael Ray Richardson's Patroons. They are looking to improve on a 1-2 record away from home.
Dakota Wizards (4-3, 30.0 QP, 4.3 Avg., 1st Western Conference)
The Wizards took their two-game winning streak on the road and were able to stretch it to three on Dec. 1 with a 98-84 road victory over the Michigan Mayhem. Guard Maurice Baker posted 26 points and forward James Maye added 21 as the Wizards picked up all seven quarter points... an overtime loss on Dec. 3 against the Eastern Conference leading Gary Steelheads snapped the Wizards winning streak at three. Dakota played without their second-leading scorer, guard Billy Thomas, who was sidelined with a minor foot injury. Leading the way was forward Kasib Powell who finished with a career-high 32 points. Baker chipped in 29 points and forward Damion Dantzler and center Chris Alexander took care of the boards as the Wizards out-rebounded the Steelheads, 73-39.
Gary Steelheads (5-3, 32.5 QP, 4.1 Avg., 1st Eastern Conference)
Gary put in some overtime last week, collecting two victories after going to the extra period. The Steeleheads posted a 2-1 record with OT wins at Albany (113-11) and against Dakota (137-127), to go along with a two-point loss at Michigan (98-96)... the Steelheads' loss to the Mayhem in Muskegon was their first road loss of the year. Gary still posts the best road record in the CBA at 3-1 and are just one road win away from matching last year's total (4-20) on the road... guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter connected for 39 points in the Dakota victory, as Gary surged back into first place in the Eastern Conference. It is the first time since the 2003-04 season that the Steelheads are in first place in any capacity in the CBA... for his efforts, Hunter was named CBA Player of the Week.
Idaho Stampede (3-5, 21.0 QP, 2.6 Avg., 4th Western Conference)
As quickly as forward Josh Davis, the 2004 CBA Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year, was signed by Idaho, he was called up to the Milwaukee Bucks. Davis signed on with the Stampede on Friday, Dec. 2. But, before he even suited up he was called up by the Bucks on Monday, Dec. 5... On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Stampede are hosting their second doubleheader of the season. The first game will feature Treasure Valley Community College and the Game Time International All-Stars. Then, Idaho tips off against Albany for the first time ever at 7:15 p.m... Albany coach Michael Ray Richardson is no stranger to the area. Richardson, who played at the University of Montana, played against the Boise State Broncos each year during conference play... Stampede guard Eric Washington celebrated the birth of his daughter, Nadia, last Wednesday, Nov. 30... last week, forward Ricky Sanchez was featured in an article at hoopshype.com where he spoke of life in Idaho, growing up, and moving on to the NBA.
Michigan Mayhem (2-5, 17.5 QP, 2.5 Avg., 4th Eastern Conference)
Michigan snapped a five-game losing streak with a 98-96 victory over Eastern Conference leading Gary on Dec. 2... no other information submitted.
Rockford Lightning (5-3, 31.5 QP, 3.9 Avg., 2nd Eastern Conference)
Rockford fell to second place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 5-3 (31.5 pts) going 0-2 in the second week of the season... the Lightning went "West" last week, playing two games against Western Conference opponents and losing back-to-back games at Yakama (123-114) and Idaho (105-103)... rookie forward Roger Powell led the team in scoring in both games averaging 22.0 points per game and picking up a season high 15 rebounds (8 offensive) in the loss at Idaho. Powell currently is second with the Lightning in rebounds (7.6 rpg.)... guard Marlon Parmer continues to lead the team in scoring and assists averaging 23.8 points (seventh in the league) and 5.6 assists (sixth in the league) per game... guard Ronnie Fields is second on the team in scoring with 18.3 ppg... center Kenyon Gamble is leading the team in rebounds at 7.6 per game while leading the league in blocks with 3.3 per game... Head Coach Chris Daleo was named the CBA Coach of the Month for November after leading the Lightning to a 5-1 record and first place in the Eastern Conference. Daleo (94-74 all-time) needs one more victory to move into third place in all-time wins at Rockford. His regular season record of 88-64 and .580 winning pct. is highest among Rockford coaches.
Sioux Falls Skyforce (4-3, 28.0 QP, 4.0 Avg., 2nd Western Conference)
The Skyforce went 2-1 on a three game road trip to Yakama and Idaho last week... the 'Force defeated Yakama 122-102 (7,0) in their third straight meeting with the Sun Kings... the last time the 'Force swept the quarter points from an opponent was on Jan. 7, 2004, as they beat the same Yakima Sun Kings 119-90 (7,0) at the Sioux Falls Arena... the 'Force split two games against Idaho, including a thrilling 94-92 (6,1) victory on Dec. 2... forward Brandon Hunter was once again considered for CBA Player of the Week after averaging 18.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest in three road games... Hunter hit his first professional three-pointer against the Stampede on Nov. 30 as he heaved in a three-quarter-length shot at the final buzzer with the outcome already determined... he was 0-for-3 from downtown the past two seasons in the NBA (0-for-3 his rookie season with Boston and did not attempt a three-pointer last season in Orlando)... the 'Force will welcome the Albany Patroons to town on Dec. 8 and 9, before heading to Bismarck to take on their archrival, the Dakota Wizards... the games vs. the Western Conference leading Wizards will be on Dec. 10 and 12.
Yakama Sun Kings (5-3, 30.5 QP, 3.8 Avg., 3rd Western Conference)
Yakama is currently on a two-game winning streak, posting victories at home over Eastern Conference foes Rockford (123-114) and Albany (105-99)... guard Antwain Barbour has been the leading scorer for the Sun Kings in five of their eight games this season (25.1 ppg.)... no other information submitted.
