Cavs Win First Finals Game Against Skyrockets

March 22, 2008 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) - Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release

LAWTON, OKLA- Before Game one of the finals began, Calvary owner Mike Brown announced exciting news about the Calvary. The Oklahoma Cavalry will now be known as the Lawton-Fort Sill Calvary. Dennis Truax, Deputy Commissioner of the CBA, also presented Daryan Selvy with the CBA Player of the Year award and Marvin Phillips with the CBA Defensive Player of the Year. The newly named Cavs took the floor Saturday night before a crowd of 2,117 fans to beat the American Conference champs 112-108.

After a 7 day break the Cavs came out a little rusty. The Minot Skyrockets scored first and never looked back. The visiting team would lead by as many as 17 in the first quarter. Skyrockets guard Ronnie Fields would hit three buckets from behind the arch to keep the team ahead by 11 at the end of the quarter.

The Cavs would make a short run in the beginning minutes of the second quarter to cut the lead to six, but the Skyrockets would continue to pound the paint to keep their lead. A

3 point field goal made by the Cavs Brandon Dean would turn the quarter and the game around closing out the half trailing only by one.

After a restful half, the Cavs would come out of the locker room to gain a one point lead with a Shawn Daniels bucket. But the veteran Fields would keep the Skyrockets in the game leading the Cavs by 2 at the end of the quarter.

The Cavs and Skyrockets would battle in the fourth quarter. Captain Curtis Haywood would hit a 3 point basket to bring the crowd to their feet and give the Cavs the lead. Haywood would hit six 3 point baskets and give him 29 points on the night.

Selvy added 20 points, Dean poured in 19, Daniels chipped in 14 points, and Nate Green scored a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

"We came out rusty," said Coach Richardson about the rocky start to the game. "We were able to come back and win. Being off for 7 days is a long time. Hopefully we will be out of it now."

The Cavs will face the Skyrockets again on Monday, March 24 at 7:30 for Game 2. The Cavs lead the series 1-0.
