LAWTON, OKLA- The Oklahoma Cavs Assistant Coach Greg Minor and Forwards Adam Spanich and Shawn Daniels traveled to Duncan Middle School Tuesday afternoon to give an encouraging speech about hard work, school, and listening to elders.

Two-hundred and fifty eighth grade students had the chance to meet the Cavs. Minor spoke about hard work and accomplishing goals, Spanich touched on listening, taking criticism and maintaining a good diet, and Daniels stressed the importance of a good education.

Minor told the crowd that when he was a younger he was the shortest kid in his group. One summer he grew about 10 inches and hit the gym every day for 4 to 6 hours bettering his skills and techniques. Because of his dedication and hard work, it made him one of the best high school athletes in the nation and being named a McDonald's All-Star.

Spanich said you will always have someone telling you what to do. The best thing that you can do is listen and take it in because the person telling you what to do usually knows best.

He used his coaches as examples. Coach Minor will give them advice, and he will take it because he spent several years in the NBA and has experience. Spanich related that example to listening to teachers in the classroom, and listening to parents at home.

Forward Shawn Daniels spoke about the importance of an education. He told the students to concentrate on studies because it can take you on to better things in life. Daniels said whether it be athleticism or academics to work hard because these will take you to the next level.

"College was one of the best experiences of my life," said Daniels. "It shouldn't be something you miss out on. It brought me to a professional basketball career and in Oklahoma."

"It's good for them to hear what they have to say because now they know that becoming successful doesn't happen overnight. They were able to hear how hard they worked throughout the years," said Principal Mr. Tune.

The students received the messages well and asked questions about important issues. After the assembly, students met the team, posed for pictures and signed autographs.

The Cavs will meet Geronimo Road Elementary third grade class on Thursday, Jan. 31.
