Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release
LAWTON, Okla. - The Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry held their 2011 Open Tryouts yesterday at the First Baptist Church gym in Lawton.
The candidates were observed by Head Coach Michael Ray Richardson throughout the day as he ran them through drills and practice games.
"It's good to have an open camp because there are a lot of guys who think they can play at this level," Coach Richardson said. "But once they get here they find out how hard it is to be at this level and it shows them how talented the players are on our team and in the league."
Nine candidates from across the country attended the tryouts in the hopes of joining the 2010 PBL Championship team.
The candidates who impressed Coach Richardson the most will be invited to the Cavs Veteran Tryouts on Dec 26. This is the final stage of the tryout process. After Coach Richardson observes how the players work together and sees who would be an asset to the team he will make his final selections.
Coach Richardson has chosen Rafael Johnson from Dallas, Texas, Dewones Smith from Longview, Texas, Antonio Odom from Tyler, Texas, Jerrell Emory from Gordon, Georgia and former Cavs player Curtis Haywood from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
"Of all the candidates that showed up Curtis was in top form," Coach Richardson said. "He knows what it takes to be a champion and the other candidates should follow his lead."
