Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release

LAWTON, OKLA.- Oklahoma Cavalry Head Coach Michael Ray Richardson along with players Eddie Smith and Adam Spanich spoke to a group of 75 7th graders at MacArthur Middle School today giving them good advice on how to reach their goals.

The students in attendance were given the opportunity to hear first-hand from Coach Richardson about the importance of staying out of drugs and gangs and surrounding themselves with positive influences.

Coach Richardson provided the students with his own personal story of how he overcame some bad decisions he made early on in his NBA career. He encouraged them to make the right choices now and expressed the importance in having a good education.

Principal Mark Mattingly said it was a good speech and the kids really enjoyed it.

"I think they had a good message about staying in school, making good choices and listening to their elders," Mr. Mattingly said. "It's nice for the kids to hear that from someone else, and I especially liked how Coach Richardson made the kids stand up, address him and state what they want to be when they grow up before they asked a question."

Guard Eddie Smith touched on hard work. He explained that nothing is given to anyone, and that only through hard work and determination can goals be conquered.

Guard Adam Spanich also spoke about making the right choices, listening to their teachers and studying hard. He advised them on the significance of having a healthy diet and told them that only they could take responsibility for themselves.

During the question and answer session at the end of the presentation, the students asked Coach Richardson, Smith and Spanich everything from their greatest accomplishments to what sports they played other than basketball growing up. It was very enlightening for all.

Coach Richardson, Darold Crow and Adam Spanich will be visiting Central Middle School tomorrow to speak to a group of 8th graders on the same topics.
