Cats Sweep Doubleheader, Clinch First Place

August 10, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

After Thursday's rainout, the Fort Worth Cats swept the San Angelo Colts in their makeup doubleheader Friday night at Foster Field. Fort Worth won game one, 5-4, and then took game two, 4-2.

The Cats needed just one win to secure first place in the United League regular season standings, as the postseason begins on August 15 at LaGrave Field.

Both teams traded runs in game one, but a sixth-inning, RBI infield single by first baseman David Bergin proved to be the difference for the Cats. With two on and only one out, Bergin hit a ground ball behind second base that scored second baseman Ryan Miller.

Bergin was stellar, going 3-for-3 with a first-inning solo home run, two singles and two RBIs. The homer was Bergin's 17th of the year.

Down 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, San Angelo threatened but came up a run short. Right fielder Cody Hudson drew a leadoff walk and then scored on an RBI triple by first baseman Steve Rinaudo.

Cats' reliever Trevor Longfellow then intentionally walked the bases loaded, and forced a game-ending 1-2-3 double play ground out. Longfellow earned a four-out save for his third of the season.

Cats' starter Roman Gomez (3-5) gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the win. Meanwhile, Colts' starter Derek Christensen (5-4) suffered the loss. Christensen allowed four runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Fort Worth built a 3-0 lead midway through game two, and then held on to win by two. A fourth-inning RBI double by Miller that brought home second baseman Kori Melo.

Down by three, the Colts rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rinaudo scored on an error by the first baseman, and centerfielder Joseph Hicks doubled and scored when designated hitter Miguel Alfonzo hit an RBI single.

The Cats tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. For the second game in a row, Miller scored on an RBI infield single, this time by right fielder Chris Ellison.

Fort Worth starter Osvaldo Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win in his Cats' debut. He allowed just three hits in four shutout innings. Colts' starter Chandler Barnard (2-1) pitched all seven innings and took the loss. Barnard allowed four runs on 11 hits in that time.

The wins improve Fort Worth to 46-28, while the losses drop San Angelo to 37-37.
