Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas "" The Wichita Falls Wildcats (10-3-3) battled for sixty minutes against the Corpus Christi IceRays (5-7-4) on Saturday, but their effort was not enough to stave off defeat, as they fell 4-1.
Colin Staub scored the Wildcats' goal, his fifth tally of the season, with Sam Piazza and Kyle Bauman picking up the assists.
As they did on Friday night, the IceRays were the first to get on the scoreboard. With the teams skating four-on-four, Nick Felan picked up the puck at the offensive blue-line and snuck a shot under the arm of Chase Munroe to give Corpus Christi the advantage at 7:46 of the opening frame.
The IceRays doubled their lead in the opening stages of the second period, as Tony Roisum ripped a one-timer from above the faceoff circle that got by Munroe.
After a change of goaltender, the Wildcats started to mount pressure and cut the deficit in half at the 12:57 mark. With Wichita Falls on a five-on- three power play, Staub roofed a shot from in close after a netfront scramble for his fifth tally of the season. Piazza and Bauman were credited with the assists, their eighth and seventh helpers, respectively.
Corpus Christi increased their lead less than a minute into the third period. Eric Purcell sent a weak shot towards the net that was deflected through David Zevnik's legs to make it 3-1.
An empty-net goal from Martin Hojbjerg sealed the deal for Corpus Christi and doomed Wichita Falls to its first regulation loss since Oct. 5 against the Amarillo Bulls.
The Wildcats be back in action next Friday when they return home to face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
