Austin Bruins News Release
Two teams that saw each other 12 times last season, played their first of just two meetings this season Saturday night in Onalaska, WI, as the Coulee Region Chill (9-7-0) defeated the Austin Bruins (10-3-0) 3-1 at the Onalaska Omni Center.
The game got off to a slow start, with only six combined shots in the first 12 minutes. Both teams were unsuccessful on two power-plays, with perhaps the best scoring chance coming off the stick of Bruins defenseman Charlie Manley (Orchard Park, NY). Manley stepped up from the blue line after a puck ricocheted hard off the end boards, only to be turned away by a tremendous glove save from Coulee Region s Blake Cates (Stillwater, MN). For the second night in a row, there was no score after one period.
In the second period, it was Austin s goalie Nick Lehr s time to shine. The Roseville, MN native stymied two Chill breakaways in the middle period, flashing the glove on multiple scoring chances. Neither team was able to solve the hot goaltenders as the game stayed scoreless through two periods.
Austin struck first in the third period when Guillaume Leclerc (Franois, France) jammed home a loose puck in the crease off a Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) breakaway for Leclerc s ninth goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Coulee Region s Griff Jeszka (Muskego, WI) tied the game on a rare rebound off the left pad of Lehr. The Chill took the lead when Eddie Matsushima (Verona, WI) found a bouncing puck, walked in on goal and scored at the 10:11 mark of the third. An empty netter by Mac Jansen (White Bear Lake, MN) clinched the 3-1 win for Coulee Region. Lehr made 32 saves in the loss, while Cates stopped 35 saves in the win.
Next weekend, the Bruins return home for two games against the Kenai River Brown Bears at Riverside Arena in Austin. Both games will start at 7:05pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com or heard on 1480AM KAUS.
