Fayetteville Patriots News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., October 25 - The Fayetteville Patriots of the NBA D-League have announced the hiring of minor league coaching veteran Casey Owens as assistant coach. Owens replaces Jerry DiGregorio, who coached in Fayetteville for one season.

Owens comes to the Patriots after serving as head coach of the Dakota Wizards of the Continental Basketball Association last season, leading the Wizards to the CBA Western Conference championship and a 32-16 record. He also served as a head coach for the 2004-05 CBA All-Star Game and was named CBA Coach of the Month three times.

"This is a new situation for both Casey and me, but it's something I'm looking forward to," Patriots head coach Mike Brown said. "Casey is basketball knowledgeable. He's been an assistant and a head coach in other leagues and he knows a lot about player personnel. And he's a winner." Owens spent his first two seasons with the Wizards as assistant coach and director of player personnel. In his three years there, Dakota won three CBA regular season championships and two overall CBA titles. Prior to joining the Wizards, Owens was assistant general manager and assistant coach for the IBL's New Mexico Slam. Owens holds a B.A. Degree in English from New Mexico State University ('94) and an M.A. in Writing and Poetics from Naropa University ('96). He taught English at Technical Vocational Institute in Albuquerque and has coached 26 players that moved on to the NBA.

"I know Casey worked with our president, Todd DeMoss, before and we've had a lot of talks with the D-League throughout this process," Brown said. "I've heard nothing but great things about him. I think he'll be a great asset for the Patriots."
