Detroit City FC News Release
HARTFORD, Connecticut - Center back Stephen Carroll tallied a late winner in stoppage time to rally Detroit City Football Club (4-2-1) past Hartford Athletic (0-1-5), 2-1, on Saturday night at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut.
Looking for a winner, forward Francis Atuahene pushed into the attacking third and forced a save on the near post to set up a corner kick in the closing moments of the contest. Forward Antoine Hoppenot played a ball in that found the head of Connor Rutz and rang of the post before falling to Carroll for his second of the season - both coming off corner opportunities.
DCFC found itself down 1-0 heading into the locker room for the third time in league play, as Hartford played a cross behind City's backline that was tucked home by Rashawn Dally in the 43rd minute.
For the first 20 minutes, Detroit City controlled the play with multiple opportunities but just couldn't connect. Detroit's best chance in the first half came on a shot from Rutz but was stopped by goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton.
After constant pressure by Le Rouge to start the second half, left back Deklan Wynne scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute to equalize. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez played a ball across the box to Wynne, who played a chip off the volley just under the crossbar.
Hartford almost regained the lead in the 81st off a set play but hit the crossbar. Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher made two saves late to keep the score level at one aside - Steinwascher finished with three saves on the night.
City dominated in the shot department, ending the fixture with 24 total shots and nine on frame, while holding Athletic to just four shots on target and 13 total attempts.
Detroit City returns to Keyworth Stadium on Saturday, April 30th, to host the New York Red Bulls II. Kick off is set for 4 pm ET. Tickets are available at tickets.detcityfc.com.
