Knoxville Smokies News Release

Sevierville, Tenn. - Chris Carpenter, making a rehab start for the Cardinals, allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings in Tennessee's 9-2 loss Monday night to Greenville (7-15, 43-47). Tennessee (16-7, 51-42) now has a 2 ½ game lead on Jacksonville in the Eastern Division. Carpenter (0-1), making a rehab appearance with the Smokies for the second straight season, worked a perfect first inning to get off on the right foot. Carpenter, however, had a rough second inning when he allowed five runs on five hits to the G-Braves. A two-run single from Bill McCarthy followed by a three-run homer by Ramon Castro accounted for the G-Braves five run inning. Carpenter threw 65 pitches, 42 for strikes, and 10 of 16 first pitch strikes.

The Smokies responded against Chris Waters (3-3) in the third inning when Al Benjamin led off the inning with his second home run of the season. Bucky Jacobsen made the score 5-2 when he added a RBI single to score John Nelson who reached base with a walk.

Castro led off the seventh with a home run off Kevin Sprague to increase the G-Braves lead to four. The home run was Castro's second of the game and only his second of the season. The G-Braves increased the lead to six when McCarthy singled home James Jurries and Richard Lewis singled home Ryan Langerhans and McCarthy.

A Tennessee rally fell short against Brett Evert in the ninth inning. Chris Weekly doubled and John Nelson ripped his fourth home run of the season with two outs to account for the final scoring. Evert worked the final four innings for his first professional save.

The Smokies will host the Braves for the second game of the three game series Tuesday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park. The Smokies' Josh Axelson (0-0, 2.59) will make his first start of the season when he faces Adam Wainright (5-7, 4.01) of the Braves.
