BayBears blank Barons in series finale

Mobile, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears ended their series against Birmingham with style Sunday night as they routed the Barons 9-0 in front of 1,930 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. BayBears starter Chris Oxspring earned his third straight win, moving his record to 6-1 since entering the rotation. Oxspring (6-3) threw six shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out five batters.

The BayBears put the game away early. After two were out Rico Washington drew a walk, Jon Knott singled and Jake Gautreau drew another walk to load the bases. Bobby Scales cleared the bags with his first triple of the year, a shot into the left-center field gap. Danny Bravo then drove home Scales with a double, making the score after one 4-0.

Todd Donovan drove in J.J Furminiak with the BayBears fifth run in the fourth with a two-out single. The BayBears added two more in the fifth as Furminiak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Knott and Freddy Guzman lined a shot off the pitcher driving in Scales.

Guzman picked up his second RBI of the game in the seventh with an infield groundout, scoring Scales with his third run scored of the contest and Bravo scored from third on a balk, making the final score 9-0.

The nine run spread was the largest for any BayBears win this season. The shutout was the fifth of the season for Mobile and the third time they have blanked the Barons.

The BayBears will welcome the Huntsville Stars to Mobile for a four-game series beginning Monday. The BayBears and Stars are tied atop the Western Division with matching 11-9 records. LHP Cory Stewart (8-5; 3.13) will start for the BayBears against Stars LHP Luis Martinez (8-4; 2.56).

As with every Monday, it will be guaranteed win night. If the BayBears fail to win, all fans in attendance will receive a free ticket to Tuesday night's game.
