Tulsa Drillers News Release

Drillers Stadium was especially rowdy Monday morning with 6,759 fans on hand for Kids Day. Unfortunately they were not able to spur the Drillers on to victory as Tulsa dropped the fourth and final game of the series 6-5. The four-game sweep dropped the Drillers to 10-14 overall.

The Springfield Cardinals wasted no time jumping in front of the Tulsa Drillers. After two straight singles off Drillers pitcher Xavier Cedeno, Jose Martinez singled home two Cardinals runs.

The Drillers answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Corey Wimberly led off the inning with a hard ground ball back to Cardinals pitcher Clayton Mortensen. The ball hit off Mortensen's leg allowing Wimberly to reach first. After a scary couple of minutes, Morentsen was able to walk it off and continue pitching.

Dexter Fowler got the Drillers on the board with a double scoring Wimberly. After Daniel Carte singled in Fowler, third baseman Jeff Dragicevich (pictured) homered giving the Drillers a 4-2 lead after only one inning of play.

The Cards retook the lead in the third inning with three runs of their own. The inning was highlighted by a two run home run by Cardinals shortstop Tyler Greene giving Springfield a 5-4 lead.

The lead proved to be short lived as the Drillers plated a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Following an infield single by shortstop Chris Nelson, Carte recorded his second RBI of the day with a towering double off the center field wall.

The Cardinals broke the tie in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run down the left field line by right fielder Luke Gorsett. It was the first home run of the season for Gorsett.

The Drillers avoided a possible big inning in the top of the sixth thanks to home plate umpire Kellen Levy. After Drillers relief pitcher Jarrett Grube walked lead-off man Shane Robinson, Jon Jay singled on a line drive to right. The hit would give the Cardinals runners at the corners but Jay was called out for being out of the batters box when he hit the ball. The play forced Robinson back to first base. Grube was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run.

Following an offensive explosion for the first four innings, both teams combined for only two hits after Gorsett's home run in the fifth. Both hits were by the Drillers.

Tulsa did manage six base runners in the final two innings but were unable to score the a tying run.

The Cardinals were led by left fielder Shane Robinson. The lead-off hitter was 2-4 with a double. The day raises his average to .423 which leads the Texas League.

The Drillers Travel to Arkansas Tuesday to start a four game series with the Travelers. The first game matches Tulsa lefty Tomas Santiago (1-0) against Arkansas starter Bobby Mosebach (2-1). The match-up is the first of an eight-game road trip for Tulsa. The Drillers will be back in action at Drillers Stadium on May 7th at 7:05 against the Arkansas Travelers.
