Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL- The Palm Beach Cardinals (52-40) shutout the Brevard County Manatees (40-52) tonight at Roger Dean Stadium by a score of 2-0. Alex Castellanos' sacrifice fly in the first inning off of Darren Byrd (0-1) proved to be the deciding run in the game. Shortstop Ted Obregon added an insurance run in the fifth inning with two-out RBI single.
Arquimedes Nieto (8-5) threw a gem in route to his eighth win of the season. Nieto threw eight 2/3 scoreless innings and tied his season-high in strikeouts with seven. The right-hander was pulled after he allowed a double and a walk in consecutive at bats with two outs in the ninth. David Carpenter got Erik Komatsu to line out to center field for the final out of the game to record his 11th save.
Nieto improved his record to 2-1 for the month of July and has yet to allow an earned run during this period over his three starts (18 2/3 innings). The right-hander is three wins away from tying the single-season record in wins by a Palm Beach Cardinal set by Adam Ottavino in 2007.
The two teams will meet up tomorrow in game two of this four-game series at Roger Dean Stadium. Richard Castillo is the probable Cardinal starter and will look to make it two in a row for Palm Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
