Cardenas Speaks At San Antonio School

San Antonio, TX - Turfcats Offensive Lineman John R. Cardenas spoke at Eduardo Villarreal Elementary School in San Antonio today. Cardenas attended this school almost two decades ago and wanted to give back and spread the good news about the Austin Turfcats and its reading program in a school assembly.
The Score With a Turfcat for Reading program is designed for elementary students in the greater central Texas I-35 corridor area. The program encourages reading by recognizing and rewarding the top 10 elementary classes that read the most combined hours during the spring semester of 2009.
Students score a touchdown for every seven hours that they read. At the end of the program, each class tallies their touchdowns, and the top ten classes that score the most touchdowns win the event and receive a special event at their school that includes a visit from the Austin Turfcats and Lady Cats.
The school saying at Eduardo Villarreal Elementary School is "start strong, stay strong, finish strong." Cardenas shared to the group about his road to where he is today and how he was in that same gym when he was there at the school.
He also shared memories of his childhood and how he went on to attend high school and play football at Holmes High School in San Antonio. He talked to the kids about his dreams and importance of a good education and how he expects them to attend college one day.
Cardenas also shared with the group about the need to do good and never give up on what they do in life. He also talked about how he got hurt in college and had to stop playing football, but he never lost my dream of playing professional football. Cardenas finished his speech by saying, "If you dream it, with hard work it can come true."
Cardenas spoke about his kindergarten teacher Ms. Cissell at Villarreal and her positive influence in his life.
