The Monday After: No Practice No Problem For Harrison

April 28, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release

Freddie Harrison signed with the Louisiana Swashbucklers two days prior to Saturday's opener with the Florida Kings. His only practice time with the team was pre-game warm-up.

Ten plays into the game, Harrison was quarterbacking after starter Alvin Bartie went down.

No worries though. Harrison backed up Bartie during the Swahbucklers' undefeated 2008 season in the Intense Football League and picked up the slack immediately, throwing for six touchdowns in the 81-0 rout of the Florida Kings.

``He showed up Saturday and went right to work,'' said Swashbucklers GM Richard Dow. ``He's that kind of athlete where you can put him at wide receiver or defensive back and he'll get the job done in whatever situation. [Swashbucklers coach Darnell Lee] simplified the game plan a little and Harrison did his job.''

What's even more amazing: Harrison's six touchdowns went to six different receivers.

SPECIAL TEAMS POINTS BOUNCE TURFCATS' WAY: : Special teams are always an adventure in indoor football, and the Austin Turfcats had a unique way to put points on the board Sunday in their 64-32 victory against the Houma Conquerors.

In additional to the usual field goals and PATs, the Turfcats got an additional six points on special teams thanks to blocking two field goals for safeties and returning a blocked Houma PAT for an additional two points. The Turfcats also registered a touchdown by returning an onside kick for a score, returned a regular kickoff for a score and got two Darren Brown field goals.

``We'll take the points any way we can get them,'' said Austin coach Chris Duliban. ``We knew going in that the arena had a low ceiling and kickers would be going with line drives, so we made the effort to put pressure on the line and getting our hands up. I've never seen anything like that ... we're up 14-0 with just one touchdown.''

NOTABLE NASH: It's hard to find bright spots in an 81-0 loss, but the play of Florida Kings DB Ronald Nash was easily notable Saturday against the Louisiana Swashbucklers.

Nash finished the game with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. His first pick came off Bartie on the game's opening possession.

GAME MVPs: The following are the Game MVPs from week two:

FLORIDA-LOUISIANA:: Freddie Harrison (Offense), Damien Huren (Defense), John Paul Jones (Lineman), Phil O'Neal (Special Teams)

TEXAS-ACADIANA:: Anthony Parks (Offense), Rudy Johnson (Defense), Brian Fletcher (Lineman); Sean Samuels (Special Teams)

AUSTIN- HOUMA: Deron Ellis (Offense), Kevin Earvine (Defense), John Cardens (line) Darrick Wallace (Special Teams)

Johnson, Huren, Earvine, Harrison and Ellis are in the running for the Vidswap.com Player Of The Week, which will be determined by fan balloting on Tuesday and announced Wednesday.
