Caps Show Fortitude at Australian Open

February 3, 2006 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Sacramento Capitals News Release

Even though 2004 Caps MVP Nicole Vaidisova fell in the round of 16 to eventual champion Amelie Mauresmo, the Czech inched her way up to a career-high No. 14 in the world rankings. And showing even more fortitude: Vaidisova had a python wrapped around her neck during a visit to the local zoo in Melbourne!

The 2005 Caps MVP Elena Likhovtseva and her partner Daniel Nestor reached the Mixed Doubles Finals championship but were halted by Martina Hingis and Mahesh Bhupathi. Less than a month has gone by since Martina Hingis returned to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and already the former world No.1 and multiple Grand Slam winner is breaking new ground. The 25-year-old Swisswoman captured her very first Grand Slam mixed doubles title, partnering with Bhupathi to defeat No.6 seeds Elena Likhovtseva and Daniel Nestor 6-3, 6-3. The wild card pairing of Hingis and Bhupathi gained crucial breaks against the Likhovtseva delivery in the middle of each set en route to the one-hour, five-minute championship victory.
