Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA (December 11, 2013) - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, added 12 players to the 2014 pre-season roster in today's MLL Supplemental Draft. The Cannons selected attackman Jack Rice in the first round with the 3rd overall pick.
"We were looking to add depth at attack and Jack Rice was our top rated attackman available," said Cannons Head Coach John Tucker. "We are excited to add Jack to the Cannons roster and to see how his dynamic play and scoring ability can help our team."
Rice is a 2013 graduate of Villanova University where he finished as the school's all-time leading scorer with 128 career goals. He also leaves Villanova as their all-time leader in game winning goals, man-up goals, games started and minutes played.
The Cannons second pick was not until No. 27 (fourth round), where they selected another attackman, Nick O'Reilly from the University of Virginia. O'Reilly is touted as a well-rounded quarterback style attackman with great vision and playmaking ability. He led UVA last season with 61 points and 38 assists.
Six of the Cannons last 10 selections added depth on the defensive side of the field. In the fifth round the Cannons added Dan DiMaria (35th overall), a close defensemen, and Kevin Kaminski (37th overall), a defensive midfielder. DiMaria played at Harvard for three seasons before suffering an injury and transferred to Duke where he played his final collegiate games, ending with a Duke National Championship. Kaminski was originally drafted by the Cannons in the fourth round of the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft. He was most recently with the Charlotte Hounds in 2012-2013.
Filling out the defensive picks were Tom Celentani (7th Round, 51st overall), Gerry Reilly (9th Round, 67th overall), Eric Hagarty (11th Round, 83rd overall ), and Thomas Keith (12th round, 91st overall). Reilly, a defensive midfielder, and Keith, a long stick midfielder, are amking their first appearance on the Cannons roster. Celentani, a close defensemen, was with the Cannons for most of the 2013 season. Hagarty returns for his 3rd season as a goalie for the Cannons.
"Our goal was to get the best players available and add depth across the field and we accomplished that today," said Coach Tucker. "I can't wait to get these guys into training camp and see them compete for not only a roster spot but for a starting role on this team."
On offense, in addition to Rice and O'Reilly, the Cannons added two UMass alumni in Kyle Smith (6th Round, 43rd Overall) and Colin Fleming (8th Round, 59th overall). Smith was one of UMass' leading attackmen in 2013 and Fleming helped lead the midfield for the Minutemen. With the 75th overall pick, the Cannons returned midfielder Mike Maggio. Maggio was on the Cannons practice squad for part of two seasons, before cracking the starting line-up in the final game of the 2013 campaign. Maggio scored his first professional goal in his only appearance.
"Coach Tucker and his staff did a great job analyzing the available players and drafting guys who will compete for roster spots," said Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney. "We want all 40 guys in training camp competing for the 19 available game day roster spots. That will ultimately make us a better team."
Next up is the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft which will take place Friday, January 10 in Philadelphia as part of the US Lacrosse National Convention. The Cannons currently hold the 8th, 17th and 19th overall picks in the first three rounds.
