'Canes To Take Part In NHL Prospects Tournament

Albany River Rats News Release


ALBANY, NY-The Albany River Rats, proud affiliate of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that Carolina will participate in the 2009 NHL Prospects Tournament from Sept ember 6-10, 2009 in Traverse City, MI. This marks the Hurricanes first entry in the annual tournament, hosted by the Detroit Red Wings, and their first entry into any rookie tournament since 2005.

River Rats Head Coach/General Manager Jeff Daniels and Assistant Coach Geordie Kinnear will guide the Hurricanes' team in the tournament. Teams will be comprised of drafted players and signees from each NHL club, as well as amateur tryout invitees. A limited number of players with prior minor-league experience, but in no case more than one full season, are eligible to compete. Top Hurricanes prospects Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, Jamie McBain, Mike Murphy, Philippe Paradis, Brandon Sutter and Chris Terry highlight Carolina's squad. The young roster also includes 2008-09 River Rats Harrison Reed, Stefan Chaput and Nick Dodge. A complete roster is attached to this release.

The Hurricanes will open tournament play on Sunday, September 6, against the New York Rangers at 3 p.m. Carolina then will take on tournament host Detroit on Monday, September 7, at 6:30 p.m., before finishing round-robin play against Atlanta on Wednesday, September 9, at 3:30 p.m. Once the eight teams have finished round-robin play in two groups, each team will play a final game on Thursday, September 10, to determine final tournament ranking, with the championship game taking place at 6:30 p.m. All games will take place at Centre Ice Arena, the training camp home of the Red Wings.
